Winter Hill Wildcat Weekly
May 17, 2024
Principal's Message
We have two big events next week for our Winter Hill community.
The 8th graders surveyed over 600 students, educators, and community members about the future Winter Hill building. They are presenting their findings and proposals to the school committee on Monday, May 20th at 7pm at City Hall. Please consider attending the meeting to see their presentation! The Facebook event for the presentation is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1741014663088140/.
On Thursday, May 23rd, we have our annual Showcase of Learning from 5 - 6 PM! Come visit the Winter Hill @ Edgerly and see the amazing work that our PK - 8th grade students have done this year. (Our PK and K teachers will be displaying their work outside of the liaisons' office on the 2nd floor.) The Equity Team will have a Bingo Card for students to complete with their families and friends to win prizes.
Please come and support our community next week!
Message from Our Equity Specialists
Haitian Flag Day
Saturday, May 18 is Haitian Flag Day. The Haitian Flag is the primary symbol of Haitian Freedom. The Haitian flag is tightly linked to a history of struggle and freedom. The holiday represents pride, unity and individual liberty. In the United States, many Haitians wear blue and red or carry the flag with them to celebrate! Equity Team encourages you to learn more with your family!
Read: Every year, Haitians all over the world ring in the new year by eating a special soup, a tradition dating back to the Haitian Revolution. Listen to this read aloud of Freedom Soup<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhRPOhZrFzU> a story about a child and her grandmother making this celebratory dish together.
Watch & Listen: Watch & Listen to the Haitian National Anthem<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GVtMMep71k> <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GVtMMep71k>
Eat: Checkout Highland Creole Cuisine<https://highlandcreolecuisine.com/menu> (just up the street from Edgerly)
Free Clothing Event
Our liaisons are planning to a Free Clothing Event next Wednesday, May 22 - 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM. The event will be just for WH families. Click the flyer for more information.
Mae's Garden Party
Mae's Garden Party - Wednesday, May 29 - Afterschool in the Courtyard at Edgerly
Join us for a spring celebration in honor of Mae Koslow-Vogel. There will be music, cold treats and purple flowers for sale. Flyer coming soon to purchase flowers. Wear purple!
PTA Update
GRANTS UPDATE. We received a $3,000 donation from Whole Foods Market!
ANNUAL MAE DAY. Save the date at dismissal time on Wednesday May 23. This is not a fundraiser; just plain fun! Weather permitting, join our summer party outdoors in the Otis Street courtyard, and enjoy a special musical performance by Ms. Stier! PTA will provide popsicles for everyone, and for those who would like to purchase ice cream, our friendly neighborhood ice cream truck offers treats for $3 to $6.
STUDENTS vs. STAFF SOCCER TOURNAMENT. On Monday June 3rd, come support our 7th and 8th graders facing off with teachers and staff at the Winter Hill soccer field on Sycamore Street. Soccer Without Borders will provide concessions, and all proceeds (cash and Venmo) will fund new and extra physical education supplies for next school year! Tournament tickets are available now on our Square site. https://square.link/u/V6i6cZgT Pay what you can for tickets, and sponsor a family if you are able to.
PTA ELECTIONS. Mark your calendars for 5:30PM on June 5th in the Otis Street Courtyard. We will be electing new officers to serve as President, Vice President and Secretary. All are welcome – no need to be a PTA member. The Nominating Committee will facilitate a discussion about the future of the PTA, and wants to hear from as many of us as possible.
Become a Member! We continue to take members throughout the school year. If you haven’t yet signed up to become a member, you can sign up as a member online, and pay your dues online too! Unless we have the vast majority of parents, caregivers and teachers signed up as members, our PTA will not have the legitimate ability to speak for the whole school community. At a time when our community is so fractured and dislocated from our beloved location on Sycamore Street, we cannot amplify your voices until you join us! Please contact winterhillpta@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Wildcat Blog
We feature a different class on our Winter Hill Wildcat Blog each week.
This Week: Ms. Rogers (Art Teacher)
Next Week: Ms. Dixon (Library Teacher)
