Cambridge Scholar Awards
Ten students from John Overton High School have received prestigious awards from Cambridge International Education, part of the University of Cambridge, to acknowledge their outstanding performance on the June 2023 Cambridge examinations.
The Cambridge awards celebrate the success of students taking Cambridge examinations around the world. Every year, more than a million students in over 160 countries prepare for their future with an education from Cambridge. Over 3,500 awards were distributed to US students for their academic success in the US and the world.
Congratulations: Gracie Bixler, Ayah Dean, Dailey Douthit, Vincent Guo, Princess Nwozo, Hasel Perez-Garcia, Erin Smith-Dills(2023 Graduate), Aaralyn Davis(2023 Graduate), Joseph Garate, and Sophie Spivey.
These students were honored and spotlighted during the March 26th school board meeting by Dr. Adrienne Battle, Director of Schools.
Senior Spotlight
Parent Meeting
On April 2 at 6:00 PM in the auditorium, we will have a meeting for senior families to go over information regarding the graduation ceremony. This will include information about tickets, cap and gown distribution, parking, rehearsal, attire, and more. Senior students will have a meeting that covers the same information during 2nd block on April 2.
Senior Dues
Senior dues should be paid by May 3. The fee is $40 and covers the cost of the graduation ceremony, senior breakfast, and senior week activities. Payments can be made at SchoolCashOnline.com: Welcome using a debit or credit card. Cash cannot be accepted at the school.
Graduation Rehearsal
Graduation rehearsal is required for all seniors participating in the graduation ceremony. Rehearsal will be at Municipal Auditorium on Friday, May 17 at 11:30-1:30. The graduation ceremony is on Monday, May 20 at 6:00 PM at Municipal Auditorium. Doors will open at 5:00 PM.

All Shook Up
The Bobcat Players are putting on the musical All Shook Up on April 11th- 15th. It's 1955, and a guitar-playing roustabout rides into a square little town and shakes things up featuring the songs of Elvis Presley.

College and Career
Spring College and Career Fair
We are excited to announce our Spring College and Career Fair for Juniors on April 5th! All Juniors will have the opportunity to speak with College Representatives, Local Businesses, Local Organizations, and the different Military branches and ask questions they may have regarding their future decisions. There will be goodies and handouts, and we are very excited about the Engineering Bus that will be here for students to explore as well. Juniors, remember to please dress nice that day, and it would be a good idea to have copies of your resume on hand as well. Prepare for April 5th, and if you have any questions, please email or speak with College and Career Coach Mrs. de Martinez in 130-B ginger.demartinez@mnps.org.
Power Youth
The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. What types of jobs are available?
Summer Programs
Ages 14-16. Experience Work participants make $12 per hour while working on art or community development projects.
Ages 16-18. High School Interns make $14 per hour work independently at private, public, non-profit, and university job sites, and receive pre-program training and coaching to ensure they have the skills needed on the job.
Ages 20-24. Peer Leaders make $17 per hour, while developing skills that are transferable to a career in youth development.
The Power Youth application portal opens from February 19, 2024 to May 18, 2024. The POWER Youth Summer Employment positions begin June 3, 2024 until July 19, 2024!

Student School Board Representative
Rising high school juniors have a chance to represent their fellow students on the MNPS Board of Education next year as the next Student Board Member. The application is now open for current sophomores who will be juniors in 2024-25. Applicants should be prepared to serve in the position for two years, ending when they graduate in 2026. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 30. Applicants must sign in with their MNPS email address and submit it on the application form.

Cluster Corner
Overton Iftar Celebration
Date: Friday, April 5th @ 6:30pm – 8:15pm
Location: Cafeteria
Details:
- This event is for all students, staff, faculty, and admin at Overton High School, as well as family and friends.
- Doors open at 6:30pm. We will have “placemats” for everyone, as well as buckets of crayons, colored pencils, and markers. The goal is to spend some time decorating your own placemat for dinner, but also to give a low-energy activity for members of the community who have been fasting all day and are tired, as well as for young kids who might come!
- SGA and MSA students are creating a presentation about Iftar and Ramadan to present at 7pm, prior to breaking the fast.
- At approximately 7:14pm (we will know a more precise time the day of), the fast will be “broken”. We will break the fast with dates, water, and bread.
Food:
SGA will provide: Dates, Water bottles, Bread
Attendees will provide: Any dinner you and your family/guests would like to eat! This can be ANYTHING – you can pick up food, make food, pack a picnic, etc. This alleviates the stress of food allergies and assures that everyone has enough food for themselves.

Granbery Elementary
Granbery Elementary will be hosting school tours for new Kindergarten families on April 11 from 6:00-7:00pm.We would love to have some former Granbery students who speak Spanish help to translate for new families. If you can help on April 11 from 6:00-7:00, please email Emily.Kajihara@mnps.org

It’s that time of year again and we are excited!!!
Tryout dates are April 2-5, with Cheer Clinic April 2-4, tryouts Friday , April 5th.
There will be a Parent Meeting before tryouts to discuss the Cheer Contract and to give details on the cheer program. Date TBD. Cheer Packets will be available after Spring Break. You must have a current physical to try out for Varsity Cheer. We are excited for 24-25 Varsity Cheer and would love you to be part of our team. Upward Bound Math-Science Southeastern Regional Institute is a program that provides its participants with an academically advanced and intensive 5-week residential STEM-based summer program. Students will live on the campus of MOREHOUSE College in Atlanta, GA, attend classes, and conduct research alongside college professors and field experts. The courses taken during the summer will prepare students for their upcoming academic school year. Students will also work with participants from varying states and meet new friends. The program is fully funded by the US Department of Education!! Vanderbilt Summer Academy is an accelerated summer program for academically advanced students. Students will live on Vandy's campus during classes. Applications are now open. Click APPLY TO VSA

AICE Exams Spring Calendar
Attention Cambridge Parents and Students: The calendar for spring Cambridge exams can be found here – Cambridge Exam Calendar Spring 2024. Please mark these dates on your calendar, as these exams are required for students in AICE courses. Attendance Matters
When students miss school, they miss out. Students who are in school learn more, achieve higher and are more likely to graduate. We all want the best for our students, and together we can make sure they’re reaching their full potential. Help us reach our attendance goal this year! Bell Schedule
This year, we are running on a five block day. Click the link BELL SCHEDULE to access this new schedule. In case of inclement weather where we would be on a delay, or half days, you can click ALTERNATE SCHEDULES to view.
Credit Recovery
Beginning February 6th, we are offering after school credit recovery for students who are interested on catching up on credits. It will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-3:45. Please fill out this CREDIT RECOVERY FORM to register.
Enriching Scholars
Starting September 23 Overton High School will be participating in MNPS’ Enriching Scholars Program. This enrichment program will provide Reading and Math instruction and support two Saturdays a month throughout the school year. Enriching Scholars will be provided by MNPS teachers and staff. Transportation will be provided if needed, and students will be served breakfast and lunch. Find My Bus Stop
The Find My Bus Stop online tool provides families with the planned school bus route/stop information. Actual route/stop times could vary due to driver shortage route coverage, traffic or mechanical breakdowns. If your student’s bus is more than 15 minutes later than expected feel free to call (615) 259-INFO (4636).
To find your student's route and stop:
- Use the Find My Bus Stop online search tool.
- Enter your student's grade and your address for the result to generate.
Graduation
Graduation will be held at Municipal Auditorium at 6:00 PM on Monday, May 20, 2024. Doors will open at 5:00 PM.

Infinite Campus Portal
Campus Portal allows families to see real-time class and assignment grades, homework, test scores, upcoming due dates, attendance information, and discipline incidents.
To create your Campus Portal account, email Mr. Krech for your activation code: austin.krech@mnps.org. Once you have a Campus Portal account, you can receive notifications through the mobile app. For step by step instructions follow this link: Receiving Notifications.
Math Tutoring
Students from any school can now visit hfamualphatheta.com to request free, high-quality, one-on-one tutoring in any subject they need help in at a time they choose themselves. Once on the website, click “Find a Tutor” and fill out some basic information such as name and phone number, etc. Then, a tutor will reach out to the student and arrange a Teams or Zoom meeting during the appointed time. Our tutors are trained in everything from basic algebra to multivariable calculus and the ACT math section.

Promising Scholars
Promising Scholars - May 30 to June 28, 2024
- Registration for Promising Scholars 2024 opens January 22.
- The priority window closes March 29.
- Information for students affected by the third grade retention law will be shared.
- To register in Promising Scholars, you will need the student's 9-digit student number and an email address.
- If you do not have the student number, you can find it in Campus Parent, our district's parent portal.
- Please allow 24 hours for the enrollment website to update with information you have added, or updated in Campus Parent
Permissions Portal
In January, the Lifetime Wellness Classes will begin the Family Life and Sexual Health Education curricular unit, which is part of the State's approved Lifetime Wellness standards. Students must give consent to participate, a form that can easily be filled out through the link: MNPS Permissions Portal which will allow a seamless completion of the form electronically. If you want a hard copy, print this consent form (translations available in Arabic, Burmese, English, Kurdish, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili). If you would like to view the content in this portion of the curriculum, there will be a copy available in the front office.

Schoology Parent Account
Student work also can be reviewed in Schoology, the district's learning management system. Families can sign up to receive an update on student work via email from Schoology. To create your Schoology Parent account, email Lori Bervoets for your activation code: lwbervoets@mnps.org. If you’re having trouble with your account, Ms. Bervoets can contact the appropriate providers for help.
SchoolCash online payment system
Parents can create an account by visiting the SchoolCash Online webpage on our website. They can then attach their student(s) to their profile.

How to view the Newsletter in additional languages.
To translate the newsletter into another language, click anywhere on the newsletter so that it opens in a browser. At the top of the screen will be a "translate" dropdown box where you can choose which language and have it translated (see picture).
