From the PTA President
Hello Hickory Friends and Families!
How is it already May?! If you can’t tell from this newsletter and the calendar, this month is going to be a busy one for our Hickory Hounds. Our upper grades will start their CAASPP testing, three grades will go on Study Trips, there’s two District events, and we have our last Association Meeting of the school year. Even though the school year is winding down, it doesn’t really feel like it on campus. Please make sure to read the weekly e-blasts from Mrs. Leach and follow Hickory Elementary and Hickory PTA on social media to keep up to date with all the upcoming events and announcements.
With gratitude,
Amy Brownstone
PTA President

Hickory Showcase & Special Someone Lunch
This year Hickory Elementary will be hosting its Showcase and Special Someone Lunch on Friday, May 24, 2024. Families will be invited on campus to have lunch with their students and then visit the classrooms. This is a fun event for the students to show off their school, classrooms, and hard work. Please make sure to check the school’s weekly updates for more information on the check-in process. All PTA members will get VIP early entry so make sure your membership is current. There’s also still time to join the PTA this year. Show your students you support them by becoming a member today! https://jointotem.com/ca/torrance/hickory-pta
There will be no options for adults to purchase lunch on campus. Please consider supporting the Hickory PTA by purchasing your picnic lunch at Raising Cane’s on May 24 (10am-10pm). Mention Hickory PTA and 15% will be donated to the Hickory PTA programs.

Walk Through Experiences
During the months of February and March, our 4th and 5th graders were able to participate in immersive educational experiences sponsored by the PTA. The 4th graders did Walk Through California, an interactive retelling of California’s rich history. The 5th graders got to do Walk Through the American Revolution, where they participated in the retelling of our nation’s beginnings. Through the use of games, music, and storytelling, history came alive for our 4th and 5th graders.
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found cart will be cleared at the end of the month on Friday, May 31, 2024. Please encourage your child to stop by Room 31 near the front of the school to check for any misplaced items such as jackets, water bottles and lunch boxes.
Music at Hickory
We are surveying Hickory Elementary School families to learn more about the interest level for music programs. Currently, Hickory students receive general music education, but do not get the opportunity to learn how to play any instruments or to play in a group/ensemble.
Did you know? There are some school districts in southern California that provide string, wind, and vocal instruction that eventually allows students to play in orchestra or band, or sing in choir, starting in elementary school and going all the way through high school!
Please take a moment to fill out this form so we can gauge our Hickory community’s interest in music opportunities: https://forms.gle/MeYrxFoJouESysN7A.
