Discovery Update
December 2, 2019
Principal's Message
December is an exciting, but short month at our school. Teachers and students will be very busy completing many projects in the next three weeks of school. As I write this newsletter and try to decide the most important information to include, I am once again in awe of what a strong learning community this is. Teachers are able to be more effective because of the incredible job you do as parents. I want to personally say thank you to the parents who support their children’s school experience through volunteering in the classroom, reading to your children and talking with your children about their school experiences.
I hope as the holiday season arrives, you get to spend wonderful days with your family and friends. One activity that is both beneficial for students during the holiday break and fun for families is to have your child read out loud to someone everyday. There is much evidence that this one activity is most important in building strong readers. It is also an excellent way to take some time to relax when things get busy. Singing songs, repeating rhymes, finding the letters in the alphabet on the road signs as your family is in the car, are also great literacy activities.
Your children are growing in so many ways. My wish is that you get to take time to enjoy this magical time with them.

Following the sing along, students may sign out in their classroom to go home with their parent. It is an early release day so most students are released at noon.

Food Drive
Congratulations and THANK YOU Discovery!
You brought in 6,098 items for our food drive. Your donations benefited the families served by the Fife Family Resource Center; helped with Thanksgiving baskets for Discovery families; and gave us a supply of food items that will last for several months. We also received many items that can be put in Kid Power Packs that go home with some of our students on the weekends.
Students earned a turkey feather for their class for every 10 items donated. We filled two turkeys (Tom and Tina ) up with feathers and earned a crazy hair day for our hard work.
THANK YOU!
The school wide Movement Marathon was a huge success. Students raised $17,500 during this event. These monies will fund programs that go right to students and families including: schoolwide family events, emergency kits, classroom grants, and PTO activities which benefit the school.
We are thankful to have such generous support!
Emergency School Closures
Please check the district website for emergency schedules. The website will have the most
updated information regarding school schedule changes due to adverse weather conditions and other emergency situations. You can help us by not calling school unless you have an emergency. The phone lines can become bogged down with so many calls. The District changes the website frequently and it is the most efficient way to get important information out.Website: www.fifeschools.com.
You will receive an automated call early in the morning if school is delayed or cancelled. Make sure the school has your current phone number!!
In addition, school closure or delay start information will be on the local TV news and radio stations.
Veteran's Day Assembly
We are thankful for our Veterans!
Thank you Mr. George!
Thank You Grandpa!
