CMS Cross Country Hosts a Giant Meet
This week the CMS Cross Country team hosted a meet that included over 300 runners. The CMS team boasts over 60 students and ran against huge squads from Hanover Middle School and the Chapman Middle School from Weymouth. Ms. Greaney, our Cross Country Coach, said, "I was so proud of everyone, each runner did a great job. We would like to thank the High School coaches and team for all of their support and assistance to make this such a successful meet, even the weather cooperated." Our runners had a great day with many setting personal records as they continue to improve. Ms. Greaney is looking forward to seeing how the team progresses the rest of the season.
The CMS Cross Country Team wanted to thank Coach Ford and the members of the CHS XC Team that help manage the course as well as all of their parents for helping as well.

7th Grade Guidance Class: Planning the Perfect Vacation!
In our recent Guidance Class project, substitute teacher Miss Estes guided the 7th graders as they embarked on an exciting journey of planning their dream vacations! This project was designed not just to spark their imaginations, but also to teach them valuable organizational skills. Here’s how our young travel planners approached this fun challenge.
Step 1: Choosing a Difficulty Level
To kick off their vacation planning, students chose from three difficulty levels that challenged their creativity and problem-solving abilities:
- Easy: Students could create a travel plan with no limits on days or budget. This option allowed for unlimited exploration, encouraging them to think big and dream of exotic destinations without restrictions.
- Medium: For a bit more structure, students selected an unlimited budget but could only plan their trips during school vacations. This choice taught them the importance of timing and planning around their school calendar.
- Hard: The ultimate challenge involved planning a trip during specific dates (February 14 - February 23) with a strict budget of $3,000. This option pushed students to prioritize their destinations, activities, and expenses, helping them learn about budgeting and making tough choices.
Planning the Vacation
Once students selected their difficulty levels, they got to work! Here’s how they approached their plans:
- Destination Research: Students explored different places around the world. Some chose sunny beaches in Hawaii, while others opted for exciting cities like New York or cultural hubs like Paris.
- Budgeting: Students then had to break down their budgets into categories such as travel, accommodation, food, and activities. This part of the project sparked lively discussions about the cost of living in different regions and how to make the most of a limited budget.
- Itinerary Creation: After finalizing their destinations and budgets, students crafted detailed itineraries. They included must-see attractions, local foods to try, and even time for relaxation!
- Presentations: To wrap up the project, students created brochures and which allowed them to share their creative ideas, inspiring their classmates and administrators with travel possibilities.
The Takeaway
The vacation planning project was a fantastic way for 7th graders to apply real-world skills in a fun and engaging manner. Not only did they learn how to organize their thoughts and structure a plan, but they also discovered the importance of budgeting and making informed choices.
As the school year continues, we look forward to seeing how these skills will help them in future projects and in their everyday lives. Who knows? Maybe some of these plans will inspire a future family vacation!
Happy travels, future explorers!
Digital Arts/Coding Exploring Green Screen Tech
With the assistance of Ms. Kay, our 6th-grade students are diving into video production, learning how to use green screens and WeVideo! They are exploring how to create engaging videos by incorporating video clips, images, text, transitions, and special effects. This hands-on project allows students to combine creativity with technology as they develop valuable skills in multimedia production. A special thank you to the CEF for their generous grant, which made it possible to purchase these amazing tools for our students!
CMS Garden Club: From Farm to (Cafeteria) Table
This week, students at CMS had the privilege of experiencing first-hand the true meaning of "Farm to Table." Farm to table means that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm, without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way. With the help of Holly Hill Farm along with Ms. Yindra and members of the CMS Garden Club, students learned how to plant, grow, and cultivate several different crops. Most recently, several different types of lettuce were harvested. The crop was then taken to our School Chef, Vinicio Cordon, where he washed, separated, and prepared the lettuce along with a delicious, homemade, vinaigrette dressing. Students were presented with a small cup of the combination during lunch, where they were able to experience the produce from start to finish. It was so much fun to see how excited students were to try this special treat. It was such a surprise to learn that lettuce never tasted so good!! Thank you to everyone involved in this special learning experience!

Attendance
Attendance Need to Knows
Massachusetts General Law Chapter 76 requires that each school notify parents and guardians if their student has five (5) or more unexcused school absences. Parents and guardians will receive a letter when their child has 5, 10, and/or 15+ days of unexcused absences. The letter will also include the number of unexcused tardies and unexcused early dismissals.
For the purposes of school attendance records, a student must arrive at school before 11:35 am to be considered "present." A student who begins the school day at 8:15 a.m. must remain in school at least until 11:35 am in order to be considered "present." Refer to MGL Chapter 72, section 8: "A pupil who is not present during at least half of a session shall be marked and counted as absent for that session.."
Absences will be excused under the following circumstances:
After a medical appointment documented with a note from the medical office
Illness or quarantine with a note from the appropriate medical office
Observance of a religious holiday
Bereavement or serious illness in family
Court appearance
A child may also be excused for other exceptional reasons with approval of the Principal or designee in accordance with the school committee policy and the regulations set in Chapter 76
Daily attendance is essential to a student's success. Missing a significant number of days of school has a detrimental effect on academic and social development. Therefore, each school will work with individual families to support student attendance.

Our Safe Home Campaign Targets Teen Drinking
Safe Harbor Cohasset Coalition is excited to reintroduce the “Our Safe Home” campaign to address the issues of youth access to alcohol in the community. This effort involves parents, guardians, merchants, and youth themselves. Parents pledge their commitment to joining other parents in providing a fun, safe, and substance-free environment for our children. Merchants pledge to comply by following the law and regulations, to not sell alcohol to young people under 21 years old. Youth are increasing awareness of the issue by talking to adults in their community.
We recognize that we cannot supervise our teens 24/7, nor can we always control the choices they make. However, we will do our part to discourage underage drinking and we will do our best to help each other support and monitor our teens.
You can join us in our efforts to create a safe space for youth in Cohasset by joining the Our Safe Home Directory at our website, www.safeharborcohasset.org/oursafehome. You do not have to have school age kids to participate, it’s simply a message of support. This is not a pledge for adults to not have alcohol in the home- it is a pledge to not provide to minors. You don’t have to share more than your name if you don’t want to, to participate. Please email safeharborcohasset@gmail.com with any questions.
