Ms. Appleman's last Principal Appreciation Day!
Deerfield staff and students celebrated Joni Appleman in a BIG way for her last Principal Appreciation Day!When Ms. Appleman arrived at school, she found her office covered in sticky notes with drawings and kind words from students and staff. You can watch a video of her next surprise, a flower parade in the afternoon, during which all staff and students lined the halls of Deerfield, gave her tissue paper flowers, and clapped and cheered as she made her way around the building. Her own children (and former Deerfield students!), Jake and Jenna, even came to surprise her for the parade! Three cheers for Principal Appleman! Deerfield loves her SO much!

Ms. Bates, Fifth Grade Teacher Deerfield’s April High Five Winner!
Fifth grade teacher Ms. Bates is April’s High Five winner! Classroom students Katie Moyle and Stella Aiken submitted the winning nominations. Stella thinks Ms. Bates deserves a High Five because “she comes up with fun activities, she’s always in a positive mood, and she makes school interesting.” Katie thinks Ms. Bates deserves a High Five because “Mrs. Bates is a kind and caring teacher who always makes time for her students.”
April marks the final High Five of the school year. The PTO High Five coordinators are in the process of notifying the remainder of the nominees of their nominations. Thank you to ALL who nominated our very deserving teachers and staff at Deerfield. Even if the nominee was not selected this year, please know that your child’s nomination probably made somebody’s day.

PTO would also like to thank the carnival organizers and volunteers, especially Adrian Serene (chair of the carnival committee), the PTO officers and all of the numerous parents and volunteers who helped staff stations or donated items. New VIP Links!
Deerfield VIPs (Very Important People) is a volunteer opportunity aimed at adults who are important to our students. Deerfield VIPs can be individuals who serve as a positive role model in the life of any Deerfield student. As a Deerfield VIP, you will volunteer for your child's teacher/grade level in a variety of settings and complete a variety of tasks. For example: a Deerfield VIP could help supervise recess, work with small groups of students, and/or complete clerical tasks. The VIPs will receive a daily schedule for the amount of time they volunteer. We are welcoming VIPs into the building for the second semester beginning Tuesday, January 16 (VIP dates/times are at the discretion of the classroom teacher). Due to limited space, VIPs will not be able to stay for or to help with lunch in the cafeteria. At this time, we're asking that VIPs only sign up for a maximum of 2 times for each of their students per quarter to allow everyone plenty of opportunity to sign up if they wish.

Transfer Request
The 24-25 Transfer Form is also available. Families may start requesting transfers for the fall at www.usd497.org / Parents and Students / Transfer Request. I believe the expectation is to wait until May to start the review/approval process for these once you know your school numbers. Current In-District students who want to attend LVS will use the Transfer Request Form as well.
Student Learner Profile
Deerfield Elementary uses academic, behavioral and social-emotional data in a collaborative process among teachers to place students in class sections for the following school year. Our goal is to achieve the best possible balance for each class within a grade level.
As a reminder Deerfield does not accept requests for specific teachers, nor are students automatically assigned to a teacher the family has had in the past. Additionally, we will not accept requests to be placed with specific classmates. Class placements for the 2024-25 school year will be made public the first week of August.
*Change Maker of the Week
Our goal is for our students to see themselves in our change makers and to also learn that they can do anything they put their mind to. Another goal is for our students to see people who are unfamiliar to them, to grow in empathy, and push for justice for the inequalities that marginalized communities face.
4/30- 5/3: Yo-Yo Ma
