September Design Principle: Success and Failure
"I try to let my decisions be guided not by what I think will succeed or fail, but what I'm going to learn from that process."
~Lin Manuel Miranda
You're Invited to the Wild Robot Movie Screening for Glennwood
In celebration of our 2nd Annual Booktoberfest, Glennwood students and staff are invited to a private and much-anticipated showing of Peter Brown's The Wild Robot at Decatur's North DeKalb AMC 16 Theater. Peter Brown is an amazing children's author and illustrator, and the release of this movie is so exciting! We hope you were able to read it this summer. If not, there is still time!
Cost of the movie tickets is provided courtesy of the Glennwood Library Fund. Each GL student is permitted to bring two guests (including their parent/chaperone) for a total of 3 tickets available per student. Families must RSVP by Friday, October 4th by completing this form. (Students must be chaperoned by at least one adult.) Food/Drink items will be available for purchase through the theater concessions.
SPACE IS LIMITED SO PLEASE RSVP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
School Picture Days are Thursday, October 3 and Tuesday, October 29
We will offer two photo days this school year for individual pictures - October 3 and October 29 with Roger Cannon Photography. If your child is absent for the first date on October 3, they can have their photo taken on October 29. Information will be sent later to families on how to order the photos.
Science/Social Studies Grades Update
Due to the length of science and social studies units, some grade levels may not have a grade for Science or Social Studies on the first progress report. All grade levels and subjects will have the required number of assignments by the next progress report.
Request for Donations from Nurse Lea
Please make sure your child has a change of clothes available that is kept in their school locker. Additionally, we are in desperate need of boys' pants of all sizes. If you have any you would be willing to donate, please drop them off at the front office or the nurse's office. Thank you!
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the Gifted Review Team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it into the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood Elementary is Susanna Shewan. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit the Gifted and Talented Services webpage.

Lighten the Load for CSD Families
As fall break approaches, we're reminded of how DEF's Lighten the Load program began -- with an elementary school teacher who told us that one of her students dreaded school breaks because he and his siblings counted on having two meals a day at school. Our Lighten the Load program has evolved since then, but we're still committed to helping remove obstacles - like food insecurity - for our kids.
The number of weekend food bags we provide has DOUBLED this year, and we need your help to ensure we're able to continue to meet this need. This is our community, and these are OUR kids. Please consider donating to DEF, or purchasing items from our Lighten the Load wish list today.
DEF Provides Suicide Intervention Training for Anyone Interested!
You probably know that September is Suicide Prevention Month -- but do you know that through Joe’s Fund, DEF’s behavioral health fund, we provide ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshops multiple times each year? These two-day workshops are open to ANY CSD staff member or Decatur community member. We held a refresher course just this week, and the next trainings will be: October 10-11, February 27-28, and March 13-14. Help us make Decatur a suicide-safe community - sign up using the QR code.
