Math Fact Fluency
Backed by Research
Students who have achieved mathematical fluency through proficiency with basic facts have increased testing performance, improved problem solving abilities and greater confidence when tackling complex mathematical tasks.
Subtraction is the Goal
The goal for October is that GES students master subtraction facts 0-18. Fall intersession is great opportunity to practice. If students are struggling, use items in the house as manipulatives. Ten frames will help students visual the equation. Pennies are great as counters. The example below is 7-3 = 4.
Math Masters for Week Ending Oct 4
Students demonstrate fact fluency in a timed assessment.
Mastery is 80% and above
Subtraction Facts 0 - 18
Ms. McClam - 5th Grade: 83%
Mrs. D. Huggins - 4th Grade: 85%
Subtraction Facts 0 - 9
Mrs. Keefe - 2nd Grade: 84%
Accelerated Reader
What is AR
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.
Children select a book at their independent reading level and read at their individual pace.
When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.)
Children using AR select their own books to read at an appropriate readability level rather than having one assigned to them. This will create a challenging reading experience without becoming frustrated. This ensures that your child can pass the quiz and experience success.
AR Incentives
- Each book has points assigned to it.
- Points will not be assigned for students that are reading books below their ability level for the purpose of obtaining an incentive.
- After the student takes a test, he or she will receive points based on the number of questions they got correct.
- These points add up and the students earn incentives based on their points.
AR Reading Logs
Parents, look for an AR reading log in your child's folder. Beginning 2nd quarter, the log will be checked for completion and accuracy.
September Class Average of the Month

Health Corner
What Should I Do?
Dear Parents/Caregivers:
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOUR CHILD IS SICK:
1.) Does your sick child need more care than the staff can give without affecting the health and safety of other children and staff?
2.) Does your child's illness keep him/her from comfortably taking part in activities?
3.) Could other children or staff get sick from being near your child?
If the answer to ANY of these questions is "YES", please keep your child out of school.
**Contact your healthcare provider or clinic if you think medical attention is needed.
