Principal Musings -Do What's Best for Kids!
Dear Bengal Families,
What an exciting season we have upon us! With Thanksgiving just last week, the start of Hanukah, and Christmas coming up very soon followed closely by Kwanzaa and the New Year, the season of holidays and celebrations are here. I hope you will take time to savor all that our community has to offer during these special times including concerts and performances or even a walk on one of the beautiful trails or beaches with friends and family.
December 13 is Lucy Garrett Beckham Day in Mount Pleasant. For those that may not have known her legacy, I have included a little blurb below.
LUCY GARRETT BECKHAM
“Do what is best for kids,” is the motto Lucy Beckham embodied each day. She was a visionary who not only recognized the unique potentials in each of her students and staff, but she created avenues for them to realize those potentials and build a successful future – whatever that looked like for each individual. Ms. Beckham was honest, compassionate, and not afraid to stand firm and challenge the status quo if it meant the best for her students. She was a natural leader and a problem solver. With intuitive foresight, she spearheaded the initial plans for this school to be established. Across her four-decade career in education, she positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of students, teachers, faculty members and families – and countless more who will attend this school. Lucy Beckham is a legend who lives on in all of our Bengal hearts. Our work at Lucy Beckham High School strives to embody what she lived for as we continue to “do what is best for kids.”
Fun Fact: Lucy Kate Beckham, Lucy's grandaughter and namesake will be graduating in the Beckham Class of 2025! She unvielded our Bengal Mascot at the groundbreaking in 2017. Lucy's grandson, William is also a Bengal!
We work hard every day to do what is best for our students. As you know, we have stellar instructors that are simply masterful in teaching and learning and a staff that is second to none supporting our teachers and students. Thank you for allowing us the honor to educate and love your children!
Happy Holidays!

FAQ from School Counseling
How often do School Counselors meet with students and will I hear directly from my student's Counselor?
Can my student adjust their second semester schedule?
Second semester block classes may be changed if space allows. Yearlong classes cannot be moved to accommodate block class changes. Please reach out to your counselor for assistance.
My student is not doing well in class and needs help. Where do I start to help support them?
We suggest that parents start by directly communicating with the teacher by email. They are the ones that have the best insight into your student's work in the classroom and they may have suggestions on what they can do to improve. Parents should also encourage their students to sign up for Focus sessions with their teacher for that class. We have teachers in after school and Saturday tutoring through Bengal Flex. Parents can also reach out to their School Counselor to request a list of teachers who tutor.
