Chat with Ms. Cat
Hello Calais Cougars
We have so much coming up over the next two weeks and I wanted to make sure you are marking your calendars for a few events.
On Tuesday, June 4th from 5:30-6:30, we will gather to celebrate the arts with an art walk from 5:30-6:00, followed by a short but sweet concert from 6:00-6:30,
On Wednesday, June 12th, Chef Dena will kick off Field Day with a fabulous BBQ picnic. Mr. Andrew will be running a fun afternoon of Field Day events. We will run this event, rain or shine but may adjust to a morning of activity if we have the high temps predicted for next week linger into the following week. Be sure to prepare them with clothes that are comfortable to be wet (and dirty) in for field day events along with a change of dry clothes for later in the day. A towel is helpful and PLEASE be sure to apply sunscreen before school so that in the afternoon we need only reapply as necessary.
On Thursday, June 13th, our K-2 classrooms are inviting families and caregivers in for their end of year ECO celebration. Also on this day, our 6th graders will travel to Boulder Beach for the annual 6th grade trip. We have not yet been able to secure a lifeguard to allow for swimming and would welcome any connections families may have. The trip will be fun even without the ability to swim but it will be A LOT MORE FUN if they can. Thanks for any help.
Friday, June 14th will be the last day of school for PreK students (potluck celebration on Friday, June 7)
Tuesday, June 18th will be the last day of school for students K-6 with a half day dismissal at 12:30. We have a treasured Calais tradition of lining the halls in the last few minutes of school and clapping the 6th graders out for their last long walk down the hall of Calais Elementary. Families and caregivers are encouraged to join us.
On the evening of June 18th, we celebrate our 6th graders with graduation at 5:30. We hope our community can gather together to celebrate with us!
Friday, June 28th, report cards will be mailed home along with classroom placement decisions for next school year. As you will recall from budget conversations this spring, a drop in Calais enrollment numbers has resulted in a move to one less classroom and we still have work to do to design a configuration of classrooms that meets the needs of our students.
Enjoy this very hot weekend!

Town of Calais - Seeking Candidates to Fill Two Vacant Selectboard Seats
The Town of Calais is seeking two community-minded individuals to join our energetic, highly-effective and forward-thinking Selectboard. The two chosen candidates will be appointed by current Selectboard members to fill two vacant seats until March 2025. At that time, voters will elect candidates to complete these terms. The candidates elected at March 2025 Town Meeting may be the same people appointed for the next nine months to fill each of these Selectboard seats, or may be new candidates.
Ideal candidates will be community members who are well versed and up to speed on Town issues and current projects, will contribute productively, and will work well with the rest of the Selectboard and Town Office staff.
If you are a Calais resident and a registered voter interested in being appointed to fill these vacant Selectboard seats until March 2025, please submit a letter of interest to SBadmin@calaisvermont.gov no later than Friday, June 7, 2024.
We thank Anne Toolan and Donny Mucherino for their extraordinary contributions to the Calais Selectboard. They have both regretfully resigned from the Selectboard, each for personal reasons. Anne has served since March 2023, and worked yeoman's labor this past year serving as primary Road Commissioner and head of the Road Crew during six months of post-flood road restoration. Donny has served since November 2023 and brought years of experience and expertise in roads management. They will be sorely missed. Thank you, Anne and Donny!
To apply: Email SBadmin@calaisvermont.gov by Friday, June 7, 2024.
