Water for ALL
CIS Social Action Project
May 16th-May 23rd
Message from Mrs. Goforth and her students:
During the 3rd nine weeks, my classes read Linda Sue Park’s novel, A Long Walk to Water. Park’s book is based on the lives of Salva and Nya, both from Southern Sudan. The reader travels with Salva as he is forced to flee his village and search for clean water, food, and safety and Nya as she walks carrying a jerrycan 6 miles roundtrip twice daily to access clean water for her family. Following the reading of this text, my students were inspired to make a difference, finding it unfair that there are so many children who have limited access to water and are unable to attend school in order to fulfill their responsibility of obtaining water for their families.
Students also engaged in research of Salva Dut’s nonprofit organization, Water for Sudan. They wrote argumentative essays to persuade readers that all of humanity deserves easy and equal access to clean water and created a proposal to CIS administration to begin conversations about a social action project. Their belief is CIS students could benefit from being involved in raising money to help purchase a well for children in need of clean drinking water. Starting May 16th through May 23rd, students at CIS will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Southern Sudan where water is not a luxury...WATER is LIFE.
Your child can help make a difference in the lives of children in Southern Sudan. Beginning May 16th and ending May 23rd, students may bring in coins or bills to place in a container located in their homeroom class. The winning 5th grade class and the winning 6th grade class will be announced on the morning of May 24th. They will receive a treat during field day. If you would like to learn more about Water for South Sudan, please check out https://www.waterforsouthsudan.org/.
Thank you for supporting this project.
Attention Parents of 6th grade Students:
NO ONE LIKES TO WAIT FOR AN APPOINTMENT! As a reminder, your student will be required to have the Tdap immunization upon entering the 7th grade. Tdap is the immunization that prevents your child from getting the whooping cough. In recent years, whooping cough has been on the rise in the adolescent population. Hence, the required Tdap immunization for all 7th graders.
Many physicians administer Tdap at your child’s 10, 11, or 12 year old appointments. Please call your child’s health care provider NOW to inquire if your student has already had Tdap. If they have, please ask your physician to fax the documentation to 803-575-5721, attention: Nurse Abercrombie.
If you find your child has not had the Tdap, please go ahead and make an appointment! You will AVOID the long appointment wait time and your student will have a smooth transition into 7th grade!
Thank you for allowing us to partner with you in keeping your child healthy!!!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
