Science Safety
Student and Teacher Requirements
All K-3 teachers, 4th - 6th science teachers, Art, and STEAM teachers are required to review safety procedures with your classes. This has 3 steps that are required to be completed by September 5th.
All Teachers
1. Review the safety guidelines with your students.
2. Post the safety guidelines on your canvas page.
3. Inform parents that they can view the safety guidelines from your canvas page.
You do not need to send home papers to get signed unless it's your preference.
Where can I find the safety guidelines? The link is below.
4th - 6th, Art, and STEAM Teachers
By federal law you are required to take a science safety course. This is not a course in GCN. You will find it on my website. Please read the information provided and complete the quiz. This MUST be completed by Sept. 18th.
Where can I find the safety course and quiz? The link is below.

Science on the Move!
Rangers from the Robbers Cave State Park will be leading our members on a hike while learning science!
The length of the Robbers Cave Trail is only .57 mile, but it is strenuous. It is rated ‘moderately difficult’ and takes about an hour.Topics include: history with a little geology and botany thrown in, oxidation of iron, cave formation, the Western Interior Seaway, native fruits, flowers and foliage, etc. There is a parking fee of $8 for OK plates and $10 for others. We will meet at the Cave parking lot.
Hike begins at 11:30.
Please pack a lunch, and we will have a OSTA picnic after the conclusion of the hike.

Ambitious Science Teaching
We will be going on a journey to become ambitious science teachers! We will be meeting two times per quarter to learn about planning for engagement, eliciting students' ideas, supporting critical thinking, and pressing for explanations. All grade levels are welcome. These ideas can be tied to multiple subject areas!
Ambitious Science Teaching offers ideas for working on these questions through a framework with 4 sets of teaching practices. These sets of practices make up the Ambitious Science Teaching Framework. The framework is based on classroom research from the past 30 years. Get started with Ambitious Science Teaching.
Please join our group on our journey!

Stemscopes - 6th Grade
New to Stemscopes?
Check out the curriculum navigation, teacher tools, and other things in the help section. It is a great place to learn Stemscopes for the first time or a refresher!
Managing all the STUFF
Part of teaching science is managing all the materials (AKA STUFF) that we have to use in class. In Stemscopes, we have some resources that give advice about managing all the resources.
Visual Glossary
Did you know we have access to a visual glossary? Students typically remember visual cues before they will remember long definitions. You may want to try these out with your students or have them make their own visual glossary.
Where do I find it? Under the scopes tab, scroll down, and you'll see it on the left-hand side.
Managing Labs/Investigations 4th - 6th
Departmentalized Woes!
Teaching science classes back-to-back is great because you have time to plan very engaging, student-focused lessons. However, labs/investigations can be a pain! I learned a strategy from a colleague that helped her "reset" supplies between classes so that her students were doing to work - not her.
1. Gather all the supplies needed for one group on a tray.
2. Take a picture of the tray.
3. At the end of the class period, display the picture.
4. Students get the supplies ready for the next class!
Site Visits
Fall Site Visits
We will be spending an entire day at each school to to help address any issues that you may be having and to give you new information. Your principal is already aware of the date, but you may want to mark your calendar too. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Early Childhood
Play-Based Science
Kids of all ages learn through play. How can we help students learn science through play? Stations are a great way to start! Below are some science processes that we use in EVERY science class. Let's start learning about it in PK - 1st!
- Observing: This is the first concept children learn from science experiments. For example, when you present them with an object, they are able to use their senses to describe its color, size, shape, and texture.
- Comparing: Once your preschoolers learn to observe items, you can introduce several items for them to compare. For example, which apple is bigger? Are the colors different?
- Classifying: After observing and comparing, preschoolers can progress to grouping items. They can arrange things according to shape, size, texture, or color.
- Measuring: This is a more advanced skill, where preschoolers can practice measuring items for comparison instead of simply comparing the objects through observation. For example, they can use a weighing scale or tape measure to determine which banana is bigger.
- Communicating: After doing experiments, preschoolers have to learn how to report their results. This can be done through documentation, drawing, or verbal description.
- Inferring: Children can learn this skill through simple experiments in the classroom. For example, if your class has a thriving plant that you water consistently, the children might notice it has withered after school has been closed for an extended period of time. The children might come to the conclusion that the plant needs water.
- Predicting: This skill is gained by making guesses based on prior observations. Preschoolers will start by predicting easy concepts, like what melts or what floats, and advance as they learn more.
Sink or Float
In this experiment, children are challenged to predict what will sink and what will float. They can then do the experiment with different objects and record their findings. Remember to ask them to note which predictions they got right
Water Absorption
Understanding how different items absorb water is an important concept for children to understand in real life. This experiment will help preschoolers determine what to use when drying a spill and help them understand why they can use a napkin to wipe up a drop of water, but they need a towel to dry themselves after bathing.
What melts in the sun?
This is a good way to pass the time on a hot, sunny day and teach your preschoolers about melting points. Pick a mixture of items that can melt and items that don't melt and add them to a muffin tin. You could choose items such as a cube of cheese, ice, a rock, butter, or a coin. Before starting the experiment, ask the children to predict which items they think will melt and record their answers.
Place the tray in the direct sun and wait at least 15 minutes to see what happens to the items and then revisit their predictions to see which ones they got right. Later, ask them to name other items they think would melt.
Children's Literature: Be a Scientist
We are All Scientists
In the first in series, Dr. Ochoa’s Stellar World, of STEAM concept board books, We Are All Scientists / Todos somos científicos, Dr. Ellen Ochoa explores how children have an innate drive for discovery. Science is all around us, and children are born with a keen desire to explore, making them natural scientists.
From learning physics by juggling and grasping biology through observing a nest of fledglings, this book inspires young readers to embrace the fact that the world is their very own scientific playground. It’s true that all our little ones are born scientists, and this series is just the place to start to power their minds.
Who is a Scientist?
It turns out they are just like us! Scientists can be any race. And any gender. They can wear lab coats, jeans, or even tutus. And they are people who love to fly drones, make art, and even eat French fries!
Meet fourteen phenomenal scientists who might just change the way you think about who a scientist is. They share their scientific work in fields like entomology, meteorology, paleontology, and engineering as well as other interesting facts about themselves and their hobbies. An "if you like this, you'll like that" flowchart in the back of the book helps students identify science careers they might be interested in. Scan a QR code at the end of the book for a video of the scientists introducing themselves!
CeCe Loves Science
“Science is all about asking questions,” says Cece’s conveniently named teacher, Ms. Curie. A class assignment requires that Cece and her friend Isaac come up with a research question, and design and conduct an experiment. Their interest in animals leads them to the perfect case study: Cece’s dog, Einstein. Kids will enjoy the “What ifs?” in this witty, realistic portrayal of the scientific method in action. After reading, invite students to brainstorm questions and plan their own inquiries.
