Message from the Headmaster

The move back to Alert level 2 reminds us all of the need to remain vigilant, to keep safe, respect others and be kind.

In between all the uncertainty and disruptions caused by Covid 19 restrictions I am pleased by the way the staff and students have continued the online learning.

There is a good feel around the school, boys are enjoying the opportunity to get back to studies and catch up with friends.

I am sure senior students have been made aware of the changes to NCEA and University Entrance due to Covid 19 including the change of the NCEA timetable as set out as below. Our Senior prizegiving has now been moved back to Wednesday 17th November 2021.

With these changes and the uncertainty, we have had to cancel the Year 12 and 13 School Ball for the second year. We anticipate a remodelled Leavers' Dinner at the end of the year for Year 13 students. Details for this will come in due course.

From today I will be away from school for a short period of time due to health reasons. In my absence Mr Graeme Barrett will be Acting Headmaster and school will run as normal.

Sport

During Covid Level 2 school will take is direction from NZ Sport on when boys can be back to participating in both training, and competition games.

The school will ensure that all Covid Health and Safety protocols will be met both on and offsite.

All information in regards to sanctioned school sport will be communicated to you from our Director of Sport, Mr Dean Hulls.

YES at the Farmers Market

The Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce and Young Enterprise Scheme brought the 20th annual Market Day to Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market on Sunday August 15th. 60 teams from 11 schools around Hawke’s Bay (including HBHS) brought their innovative products and services to the market, joined by hundreds of proud, local supporters. All teams showed a deep understanding of enterprise, kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection), sustainability and the positive impact their small business could have on the community.
Congratulations to all the teams involved in this event.

A huge congratulations to Old Boys Dylan Thomas (Hockey) and Daniel Meech (Equestrian) who represented New Zealand at the 2021 Olympics. We are so proud of you!

A massive shout out to @norsewoodknitwear for the amazing giveaway of FREE socks to our Hastings Boys’ High School rugby teams. Both the school and our boys are incredibly thankful. The socks will no doubt be well used and appreciated.

Rotary Club Fundraiser

Thank you to the 20 Year 12 and 13 students who volunteered their time to help at the Rotary Club fundraiser on the evening of Friday July 30. The funds raised from this go towards the HB community sports park and the provision of programs for youth.

Te Pae Tawhiti Event (The Young Enterprise)

A group of young Maori students attended this event in July along with students from Napier Girls, Sacred Heart and St Paticks. This programme is targeted at high school age rangatahi Maori who are interested in a future in digital technology, animation, robotics and other fields.

Basketball Hawke's Bay U19s

LeBron Tuala Fata was chosen for this team. LeBron did well to settle into a well established team and made made a solid contribution to the team.

Basketball Hawke's Bay Under 17s - 10th at Nationals

Several of our students were chosen for this team.

Denim Tuala Fata (Captain), Kalani Wairau-Pomana, Leikim Rihia, Tama Ropiha, Ihaia Abbott. Coached by Mr Jordan Pomana who is an Assistant Coach of our Senior A Basketball Team at HBHS. Mr Peleti Tuala-Fata (Board of Trustees member) was the Assistant Coach.

Although the team placed 10th they were highly competitive in every game, going down only in the final minutes of each game. The competition was tough with a pool of very strong players.
