🌺Growcery Green House Dedication🌺
On March 26, the BSES dedicated the Growcery Green House! With the NC Go Outside Grant, awarded to Fourth grade Math and Science Teacher, Abigail McKenzie Stumpo, a greenhouse was constructed to support students and the school community! View The Pulse March for more information and construction pictures.
I Spoke with Ms. Stumpo
I asked Ms. Stumpo what impact the Growcery Green House will have on the school community.
"The success we have had so far is the engagement of the students in eating healthier. We already had the hydroponics going and the kids have already been thinking about vegetables, healthy eating and finding the vegetables they like."
Ms. Stumpo went on to say: "Community members are already talking about donating planter boxes to add sponsorship to show that the community is behind this project which is really exciting! From there, I want to expand and have days where our families can come out, help us plant and see the fruit of their labor because we are a farming community. I also want the kids to start their own Farmer's Market to create revenue so it can stay sustainable and that no matter who is here, it will continue to grow."
I asked Ms. Stumpo if this program could expand into our community, possibly as community gardens?
She noted: "I would love that! The possibilities are endless! We are already expanding to year end, so we can go anywhere with this!"
I Spoke with the School Community
I asked two students what the greenhouse meant to them.
"[We can] grow vegetables and fruit for everyone in the school to be healthy." -Demi H.
"We can plant vegetables and fruit for everyone in the school to eat to be healthy and for the people who can only eat certain foods, they can have vegetables and fruit to eat."
-Darnley S.
I asked Dr. Day-Heggie and Ms. Clemmons what impact they feel the Green House will have on the school community.
"My hope is that our BSES Bulldogs will gain greater interest in healthy living. This will provide more hands-on learning about bioecological and agriculture. Ultimately, we plan to have a BSES Farmer's Market. This would provide our Bulldogs with entrepreneurial opportunities and skills." -Dr. Charmain Day-Heggie, Principal
"The greenhouse will allow the students to see that music can be found everywhere. We can take what is grown in the greenhouse to see how music and nature are related. From seed to sing, planting and growing is layered [for the school community] like how music is layered like the soul." - Ms. Bailey Clemmons, Music Teacher

April Is...
Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month
Autism Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to learn about, understand, grow in our respect for and celebrate children and adults who have been diagnosed with Autism.
Child Abuse Prevention Month
Child Abuse Prevention Month is an opportunity for communities to join together to support families in preventing abuse of our children. It is a time for us to increase our understanding of child abuse through research and education. We can also provide education and resources to help families and children be healthy individually so the family unit can be healthy.
Poetry Month
National Poetry Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate the beauty that poets bring to our lives and to the world!
A Sunflower
A flower will grow from a tiny seed,
the right conditions is all you need.
Then out will pop a tiny shoot
that sucks up water from its root.
Leaves will grow high and low
some very heavy, some soft as snow.
Then comes the day the buds come out,
some tall stems and some ones stout.
There will be a beautiful flower
some smell sweet, some sour
The middle bit's the one to keep
it smells so sweet you fall asleep.
The next you know the seed will go,
and then it's time for the wind do blow.
And then the cycle keeps on going
next you know it's going on snowing.

Breathe for Collaboration:
Working Together for Greater Impact
Collaboration is the essence of life. The wind, bees and flowers work together, to spread the pollen. Mindfulness gives us the opportunity to work with the cosmic collaboration. -Amit Ray
Alone we are smart. Together we are brilliant. -Steven Anderson
The most productive, healthy and satisfying relationships are based, not on a quid pro quo but an ebb and flow of mutual support over time. Don’t just be a giver. Be an extremely helpful giver who
demonstrates an awareness of what that person most needs. -Kare Anderson
Collaboration isn’t about giving up our individuality; it’s about realizing our greater potential. -Joseph Rain
Community Compliments
*Great for Classrooms, Staff Meetings, Families and Friends
Community Compliments is a Settle In activity in which students give and receive
compliments while trying to remember all the compliments that have been given so far!
1. Let’s circle up and settle in.
2. In this activity, we are going to send compliments around the circle, but we’ll need everyone’s collaboration to make it all the way around!
3. The first person holding the talking stick will give a compliment to the person sitting next to them. That person then repeats the compliment they received, and shares a new compliment with the person sitting on the other side of them.
4. The next person repeats the compliment about the first person, about them, and about the person next to them.
5. When it is your turn, you have to restate each compliment for each person that has already received one, including yourself! The reason this is a collaborative practice is because you will likely need the support of your peers for this one!
6. Example: Josué passes to Shaniqua and says, “Shaniqua, you are courageous.” Shaniqua passes to River and says, “River, you are helpful, and I am courageous.” River passes to Catalina and says,
“Catalina, you are funny, Shaniqua is courageous, and I am helpful.”
7. Continue around the circle until everyone has gone. If someone gets stuck, help them out! This is a collaborative activity.
Reflection Questions
What was it like to listen to all of the compliments being passed and repeated?
What was it like to receive a compliment and hear it repeated?
What did you learn about collaboration from this activity?
Pedagogical Pointers
1) PRIMARY DIFFERENTIATION
For younger students, you can skip the repetition and simply have them repeat the compliment they received and then share one for the person next to them.
2) VARIATIONS
If you have a larger class/family/group, you can break up into smaller groups to move through this
activity faster. You can also give each student a notecard and a marker and ask them to write down
the compliment they received. If someone gets stuck, they can hold up the card!
3) ADULT DIFFERENTIATION
This can be a great practice to open a staff meeting or other adult-learning environment in a collaborative and connected way.
