March 10 - 14, 2025
Pie Day is Friday 3.14! Once again Open will celebrate the circle with PIE and a 3.14 mile race course to Belle Isle and back. The cost is $5 to participate and proceeds will go to the senior class. This year the race is being coordinated as part of Karys, Temple, and Shea's Senior Project.
Let's help them make this a success! You must REGISTER HERE to participate.
Dear Open High Family,
VCU is on spring break this week so there will be no after-school tutoring. As we begin to prepare for spring SOL and AP exams, individual teachers are also offering lunch and after-school tutoring. Some students are required to attend. Check with your teachers today!
Open will host a Rodeo-Themed Family Fest on March 28th from 4-7 p.m. at Holly Street Park. We look forward to having all members of our OHS community come together for some good old-fashion fun! There will be games for kids of all ages and even some cowboy bingo with prizes for the older folks too! Open will provide the main dishes, but please SIGN UP to bring side dishes, desserts, drinks or paper products! We can't wait to kick off Spring Break with you all, so bring your moms, dads, siblings, grandparents and friends! All are invited!
Congratulations to Eve Smith and Yadhira Ortiz-Hernandez who won special recognition at the City Wide Art Festival on Saturday. Great to see all the amazing art work and performances by trumpeter Jude Sargent and dancer Riyan Stevens.

Class of 2025
GRASP Scholarships:
- Any student (or family) that met with Amy Swierczewski this year is eligible to apply for a GRASP Scholarship (or the scholarships administered by GRASP). A link to all these scholarships are here. Please note the Pathways scholarship. This is open to students in Richmond City schools only. It is for students planning to attend a 2-year Virginia Community College. This $1000 scholarship also comes with up to a $400 stipend per month for a student to pay for items that may be barriers to attending school (food, transportation, books, computer, etc.). GRASP wants to remove barriers that may be keeping a student from pursuing furthering their education. This is a wonderful opportunity!
- The Wassmer Foundation has a fantastic scholarship ($7500/year x 4 years) -- 5 awarded/year to students in the Greater Richmond area. The deadline has been extended to March 15. You can read more about the criteria here.
- Reynolds Community College has extended their scholarship deadline to March 8. Average award is $1500. You can apply here
- Visit the Class of 2025 Google Classroom for many more scholarships!
FAFSA Help:
- GRASP is holding free, drop in (no appointment!) FAFSA Help sessions at the Carytown Capital One Cafe, 2933 W Cary Street from 10 am - 1 pm Saturday March 8 and March 22nd. If you still need help completing a FAFSA, this is a great opportunity.
GRASP at Open
- Amy will be at Open on Monday, March 10 from 8:30 - 1:30 in the Resource Room. Please feel free to stop by or make an appointment here. I am always happy to schedule virtual appointments outside of Mondays-- email me at Open@grasp4va.org. Bring in your award letters if you'd like to compare and see what the bottom line cost is for a school.
Spring Testing

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Please become a member and make your voice heard. Your dues are an important funding source for our school, supporting field trips, teacher classroom supplies, student clubs, monthly breakfasts, senior scholarships, the fall festival, the end-of-the year picnic, teacher appreciation week, holiday treats, and more! Joining does not obligate you to anything although we are always looking for more help! Extra donations are also very much appreciated. Consider linking your Kroger Shopper's Card to the Open High PTSA.
