Student Union Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Lake Shore Public Schools will be joined by Superintendent Dr. DiPonio and Lake Shore High School Principal Dr. Bross to commemorate the completion of the new Student Union at Lake Shore High School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its front entrance on 13 Mile Road. The dedication will take place on Monday, September 2nd at 5pm as part of the high school's Sneak Preview Night.
LSPS invites the Shorian Nation to take part in this proud grand opening announcement of our newly imagined Lake Shore High School. Architects envisioned a space that fostered learning and inspired creativity and innovation. It was to be a beacon of modernity, a testament to progress, and a reflection of the community's values and that promise has been delivered. The space, which has been under construction for the past 18 months, will provide our students with a world-class hub to match the world-class staff and world-class students that we have at Lake Shore Public Schools.

Food Service
Lake Shore Public Schools, in partnership with Chartwells Food Services, provides healthy meals to all children. Families can use our Nutrislice app for access to menus.
You asked, we listened! Introducing Family Portal by Meal Magic for all things Food Service such as making deposits, transferring between students, viewing account history, setting daily spending limits or other restrictions!
We are excited to announce that due to Michigan School Meals Law, all meals will be free again for the 2024-2025 school year! Lake Shore Public Schools is still seeking to obtain completed Education Benefits Forms from all families; It is important to receive these applications in order to attain the maximum amount of federal assistance for other programs (outside of free meals) that greatly benefit our students and families such as school funding, technology funding, SAT, ACT, and AP test discounts, college application discounts, athletics, grants, and instructional support programs. This form needs to be filled out each school year, one per family.
The easiest way to apply is online by visiting https://lakeshore.familyportal.cloud/.
The Eligibility Benefit Form (EBF) is also located here, in hard copy form, and completed forms should be returned to your child's school.
Please have your child bring their Student ID as this identification will be utilized by our Food Service Department for all meals. It should be ready to be scanned when making food selections.
Contact Rosa Burg at (586) 285-8926 or rburg@lsps.org for questions or assistance completing the Eligibility Benefits Form. Chartwells Dining Service's goal is to serve up happy and healthy meals while making the cafeteria the happiest place in school.
Your Attendance Matters
Let’s help students build a habit of good attendance early & often. Your attendance matters: https://youtu.be/HjxztQhpMXY
Education is the passport to the future, and attendance is the stamp that gets you there. Our Management team understands the importance of showing up to serve others.
Our Lake Shore Management team held their annual Summer Strategic Planning Retreat at Jimmy John's Field. At this meeting, district leaders continued to plan for the 2024-25 school year by discussing priority initiatives, leadership in uncertain times with Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, legal considerations and updates from Jessie McNamara, and future planning. They continue to carry out the district vision and values using our guiding principles as the focus.
The event space was a perfect place to meet because of the presence of Lake Shore High School Class of 2013's Brandon Lempke, Ballpark Operations at United Shore Professional Baseball League. He welcomed Shorian leaders with open arms and took care of their every need. Brandon received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a Sports Management concentration and has worked with USPBL since 2020.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio closed the meeting with this sage advice. "If we take care of our people, our people will take care of our kids, and we'll be in good shape. Let's prioritize taking care of each other."
A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Lake Shore has administrators and bosses who lead by action and example.
Bonus: Coincidently, Lake Shore High School's Marching Band held a fundraiser at Jimmy John's Field and entertained spectators by a National Anthem performance!
Technology Assistance
Our districtwide 1:1 Chromebook initiative is designed to cultivate learning. We are excited to continue to distribute devices to all students this year! Devices will be distributed to new students on their first day of school.
Chromebooks run the Google Chrome operating system, a lightweight OS that is designed to run apps over the web. The devices are protected from viruses and managed by the district through a central web console. These computers allow access to anytime, anywhere, anyway learning, and allow students to build technology skills and responsibility in a safe and caring environment. To view our 1:1 Frequently Asked Questions document, visit this link.
Have you turned on your Chromebook lately or tried logging into PowerSchool or Schoology? If you need technology support, send an email to helpdesk@lsps.org. Parents, please include your child’s first and last name and building.
Chromebook Insurance
Since the adoption of 1:1 Chromebooks in our district we have offered optional insurance coverage.
This year we will be using Smart Tech to insure our devices. The cost is $29 per device and there are no deductibles and no claim limits. It covers accidental damage, battery failure, liquid damage, and manufacturer defects. It also includes loss and theft. Chargers are not included in coverage. This is a one-time fee per school year.
While insurance coverage still remains optional, it is highly recommended. Without coverage you will be responsible for the full cost of any repairs outside of manufacturer defects. Below is an example of costs (prices will fluctuate):
-Chromebook: $300
-Screen: $75
-Battery: $40
-Hinges: $25
-Keyboard: $20
-Camera: $10
Everything else remains the same. Students will still bring devices to the media center when they need a repair and we will process the claims.
For $29 per device/per year you are covered for everything other than malicious damage and chargers. There are no additional out-of-pocket fees.
The portal to purchase insurance is open now until December 31st and coverage starts from date of purchase until August 30, 2025:https://smarttechinsurance.com/organization/lake-shore-public-schools/

Message from School Nurse Katie Weidman
The start of the school year is almost here! But first, I'd like to take a moment to send out a friendly reminder regarding those students with medical needs. If your child has a medical condition that requires medical treatment and/or medication during school hours, required documentation signed by your student’s physician and parent/guardian is needed prior to the start of the first day of school. We will not be able to administer any medication without having the required forms completed. Please see the link below to our website for the required documentation. All medical forms can be faxed to the student's school building listed on this webpage.
Please note all medication must be brought in by a parent/guardian unless student is self-carrying medication. Required documentation located on our website is still needed for self-carried medications and note that ONLY EpiPen and asthma inhalers are allowed to be self-carried. All other medication must be kept in the main office.

Stay Safe
OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.

LSPS Welcome Back Convocation
Welcome back, Lake Shore!
We're proud—proud of our past and prospects of our future.
During the District’s Welcome Back Convocation, all 400+ employees signed the “A Century of Excellence, A Future of Possibilities” wall, enjoyed a delicious breakfast, visited with colleagues, and listened to keynote speakers tailoring their messages to highlight this year's motto: Family.
Speaker highlights included a Welcome message from Principal Dr. Bross and Senior Genny Zielinski, LSPS Foundation update from LSHS alumna Rebecca Dick, and Closing keynote from Superintendent Dr. Joe DiPonio.
Over the Summer, Genny served as a Teacher Cadet. Through that role, she was inspired by how LSPS teachers guide their classrooms with such grace. She spoke with such poise and confidence as she shared the following message, "Teaching is no easy task, one that many take for granted. I want to take this opportunity to recognize all of the work each of you put in and the difference it can make." She went on to share example after example of the great experiences she's had with her teachers.
She continued, "This job is more work than people realize. You all are tasked with the demanding, tiring role of helping the world one child at a time. Please recognize what you do is valued, please recognize the purpose you hold, the importance you have being a part of these children’s every day lives. If you are to leave with one message, may it be that you matter. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. Your determination, loving souls, and persevering nature are a gift."
For 101 years we've had an unwavering belief in education rooted in moments in time that share our inspiration, innovation, and celebration. The Shorian Nation believes in the transformative power of education for all students.
On behalf of everyone in the district, we are excited to see you on Tuesday, September 3rd. Cheers to 101 Years, Lake Shore! Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian!

NHS Blood Drive
Thank you to the National Honor Society student volunteers for holding a blood drive. We appreciate Versiti staff for checking temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin levels prior to the actual 8-10 minute donation.
Third grade teacher Robin Nicholl and STEAM teacher Stewart Gardiner are pro donors. They believe in supporting NHS and giving back, donating for years. Senior Kayla Hartsig is a NHS student who chose to donate for the first time in April 2024 when she was also helping to host a drive. She was nervous at first, but her positive experience drove her to repeat the selfless act. Like Kayla, many students exhibit the Shorian character strength of kindness and a true care for others.
Robin, Stewart, and Kayla's choice to donate will save 3 lives each and inspire the entire Shorian Nation.
Advisor Mrs. Rancilio has organized this event as an opportunity to give back to the community. She sees it as a way to expose students to the value of donating and encourage them to become lifelong donors. NHS hosts a blood drive 3x per year; Your next opportunity to donate will be in November.
Your donation served a multi-faceted purpose in our community: life-saving blood donation, demonstration of volunteerism to our students, and the opportunity for our student leaders to donate their own time in service. Thank you for choosing to donate blood to Versiti Blood Centers and brave the needle.
Innovation
Professional Development
Staff continue to sharpen their saws in Professional Development sessions to transform how they educate students and change what classrooms look like so that students are operating at the optimal level of engagement and achievement.
Our K-5 teachers, administrators, and literacy coaches gained insight into the latest research to more effectively support student reading practices and become equipped with an array of practical tools and strategies to enhance teaching practices, by completing Amplify CKLA Strengthening Knowledge training. Amplify CKLA is based on research showing that closing the background knowledge gap is necessary for closing the reading gap and ensuring equity for all students. To that end, Amplify CKLA teaches literacy through the lens of cross-curricular domains in science, history, literature, and culture. It was developed in response to research that shows the critical impact of background knowledge on reading comprehension and college- and career-readiness.
We spotted Lakisha Flowers, Account Manager, and Cindy Gildein, Curriculum Specialist, assisting with a PILOT for 6-12 of myPerspectives as a new ELA resource. myPerspectives ELA is a Grades 6-12 student-centered curriculum that provides a connected approach to improving student learning and achievement. Students read texts and engage in activities that inspire thoughtful conversation, discussion, and debate.
As two former middle school ELA teachers, Lakisha and Cindy are passionate about myPerspectives because it promotes student ownership of their learning through goal setting, student choice, and reflection; encourages social collaboration; provides opportunities to personalize for learning in response to student performance and need. Lakisha said, "It gives variety, feedback, and explicit instructions for both students and teachers and is engaging."
In addition, our staff used I-Ready Benchmark Assessment and Personalized Instruction to build a data-informed response to student learning and achievement. The session kicked off with "getting good data" for the diagnostic assessment, reporting, and planning for small group instruction using diagnostic data. The second part focused on personalized instruction and monitoring.
Examples of the menu of opportunities for elective teachers included Art of Education, Deep Dive Into FLEX, Skills USA, SHAPE American National Health Standards, Quaver Music, CPI certification, Guidance on the Future of CS in the Age of AI, and more!
Lake Shore also knows the importance of technology in the education system today. Using district-issued Chromebooks, deployed for the past 8 years, students of all ages can engage with learning using a variety of resources accessible on Schoology, our learning management system (LMS). Since 2017, Lake Shore Public Schools has fully adopted Schoology as its districtwide LMS because of its intuitive learner-centric design, its ability to support different teaching methods, and its strong integration capabilities.
Additional mandatory trainings for staff may have included Active Shooter, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Prevention, FERPA: Confidentiality of Records, School Safety: Nightlock and Run, Fight, Hide, Seclusion and Restraint Awareness, and Students Experiencing Homelessness Awareness; PLCs scheduled throughout the year give our staff time to reflect on these topics and collaborate to create a community of best practices.
Our community can expect 180 days of high-quality instruction in a safe environment and supported by Lake Shore teachers in which high, clear expectations and positive relationships are fostered and active learning is promoted.
Shorian Success Camp
For the first time, Lake Shore High School offered a Shorian Success Camp, a 1-day event open to incoming freshmen to prepare for the transition to the high school by familiarizing them with what Lake Shore has to offer for academics, support, and extracurriculars. We also focused on organization, school spirit, expectations, procedures, and fostering a sense of belonging.
For Freshman Pines Smedden, this camp was beneficial because "I am nervous about a new school, but excited to join as many clubs as possible."
Facilitator Julie Roda said, "I wanted to be a part of this camp to help develop relationships and discuss policies and procedures to ensure a smooth high school transition." With assistance from Mrs. Rancillo, Mrs. May, Mrs. Saracino, Mr. Spriet, and Mrs. Elkins, they have accomplished that goal.
Thank you to the 8 National Honor Society students for your service to others at this event as well!
Orientations and Open Houses
There are so many reasons for students to get excited about the upcoming school year!
We invited students to visit their building for Orientation Days and Open Houses to learn more about what these schools offer and to connect with other new students. The presentations shared expectations, resources, and advice for a better student experience.

Shorian Pride is more than a sticker. It is the feeling of unity, displayed by deep, long-lasting relationships in a family environment. It is when you find yourself calling Lake Shore your home and referring to your classmates as siblings.
Our student body still displays their spirit in a variety of ways. Students wear the traditional red and white gear to share their love for Lake Shore. They may choose from several extracurricular club options, meeting well after the last bell, because of their sheer dedication.
The transition a new school may feel overwhelming. New building. New schedule. New friends. Over time, those years transform from anxiety to excitement. It is the atmosphere at Lake Shore schools where students learn to adapt, develop skills of independence and responsibility, and prepare for new opportunities.
Thank you administrators and teacher leaders for your leadership, kindness, and extraordinary patience as you helped our students navigate the new year with your friendly demeanors and understanding mindset.
Lake Shore Early Childhood Center's Open House
At our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center's Open House, parents were able to drop-off supplies, receive fundraiser and picture day information, tour the classrooms, and meet new friends and teachers. There was a petting zoo, ice cream truck, and pony rides, too!
Lake Shore High School Class of 2012 graduates Mr. and Mrs. Lutz are excited to introduce Samuel to GSRP. The couple is now married, but were good friends in high school and loved being part of the Shorian Nation. They said, "We live outside the district, but Grandma Lucille lives next to Violet and helps us with Sammy. Because Lake Shore is so caring, in a very soul-energizing way, we wanted to send Sammy here to be given that same experience. It is where we met all of our favorite teachers!"
Built in 1950, our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center, formally known as Shores Child Care, is a wonderful facility for all kids. Let Your Child's Career with Lake Shore Begin with Us is the slogan we like to use as we welcome families.
LSECC Coordinator Kelly Biondo reflected, "I am incredibly proud of the ECC and its remarkable staff. Their unwavering dedication, boundless passion, and tireless efforts inspire me every day. Their commitment to excellence and their ability to create a nurturing environment truly make it an honor to be a part of this team. Going to work each day is a joy because of the shared sense of purpose, the collaborative spirit, and the genuine care that radiates throughout our work. Together, we make a difference, and that is something truly worth looking forward to."
The elementary and secondary schools have their own Meet the Teacher evenings, in mid-September. These events will be great opportunities to feel comfortable navigating the building and leave with a positive preview of what's to come.

Celebration
Welcome Kim Winiarski
Lake Shore Public Schools is proud to welcome Kim Winiarski as our new Principal at Rodgers Elementary beginning for the 2024-2025 school year.
A veteran educator with over 15 years of experience with Hamtramck Public Schools, Mrs. Winiarski joins the Lake Shore family with a wealth of experience. She began her educational career as an elementary teacher and has since served as a teacher leader, instructional coach, academic coordinator, and principal.
Mrs. Winiarski exceled in the classroom, but has taken on these additional responsibilities and roles to guide her colleagues, enhance educational practices, and advocate for positive change within her school community. Her personal mission is simple: To leave a legacy behind by inspiring lifelong learners while making the world a better place. These are beautiful sentiments from an inspiring leader.
An advocate for the idea that every child is capable of learning, Mrs. Winiarski was fortunate to be influenced by great educators. She fondly remembers her former teacher from Clintondale High School, Mrs. Ritter. She explained, "Mrs. Ritter observed my personal challenges, yet saw my potential. She emphasized the transformative power of care for others."
Mrs. Winiarski graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Elementary Education. She also earned a Masters degree in K-12 Administration from Wayne State University.
Her impact has been immensely positive and marked with a collaborative spirit. We are excited for her to bring that same energy and philosophy to Rodgers.
Mrs. Winiarski is married to her husband David and has three children, Ethan (22), Paisley (7), and Kailey (3); This family supports the community and district as Saint Clair Shores residents! In her free time, she enjoys vacationing, walking the dogs named Max and Bailey, and staying active at the gym.
Alumni Spotlights
When you enroll in Lake Shore Public Schools, you not only join a prestigious school, but also become part of a family. And when you graduate, your experiences create the launching pad for a successful career. Periodically, we spotlight on our graduates, sharing their accomplishments because we are loud and proud of them.
Samantha (Spiteri) Steffy, a Lake Shore High School Class of 2008 graduate, authored her first children's book titled Where Did The Teacher's Voice Go?
Sam wrote, "This first book was inspired by when I would lose my voice all the time back when I was in the classroom and my students would often ask me where it went. Being that a lot of them were younger they didn’t exactly understand that some people just lost their voice more than others. Me being one of them! With that being said we’d always spend some time brainstorming where my voice had gone. Lots of answers were typically Target or McDonalds."
Purchase this 31-page children's book on Amazon in both paperback and as an ebook at https://a.co/d/gzNeGz7.
Sam is married to Jarrett and have 2 beautiful dogs named Tahoe and Kai. She grew up in St. Clair Shores, Michigan and played soccer, basketball, and volleyball. She then went to Olivet College where she double majored in both English and Elementary Education. After teaching preschool to second grade for nearly 10 years, she stepped aside to make a dream of hers a reality. Her love for reading and writing began at a young age when her Nana and I would create stories together.
In May, St. Clair Shores native, Olympian "Miracle on Ice" Mark Wells died at age 66. Mark graduated from Lake Shore High School in 1975. Following the completion of his college career, Wells, along with Falcons teammate Ken Morrow, was selected to play on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey team that went on to win the gold medal at Lake Placid.

Ryan Grenadier is a 2018 graduate of Lake Shore High School who has spent the last year creating the first language learning app that teaches slang and localized language. The website is located at https://www.fluentflow.ai/.
He explains, "If you are practicing Spanish on the app you can select any country that speaks Spanish and the words that it teaches will change based on the country." His former Spanish teacher inspired him to create it.
LSHS Class of 2019 Valedictorian Elizabeth Stacheit received her Masters of Science in Physician Assistant from University of Detroit Mercy. She was on the 5-year track and completed it. Way to go, Elizabeth!
