February 2025
Dear Hawk Families,
Happy February! It’s hard to believe we are already moving into the second month of the year. This is a wonderful time to reflect on all the progress our students have made so far and to continue building strong habits for learning, kindness, and responsibility.
We have Valentine’s Day coming up, which is a perfect reminder to practice kindness and appreciation for one another. Whether through a simple act of kindness, a friendly smile, or a thoughtful word, we can all make a difference in someone’s day.
With winter weather still upon us, please remember to send your child with warm clothing for outdoor recess, and keep an eye on any potential weather-related school updates.
Thank you for your continued support in making Longview such a wonderful place to learn and grow. As always, my door is open, and I encourage you to reach out with any questions or thoughts.
Wishing you all a fantastic February!
Warmly,
Jennifer L. Gonzalez
Principal
Valentine's Day Reminders
Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and with that come some innocent looking hazards. Flowers usually arrive in a glass vase. Glass is specifically identified as a hazardous item on the bus, and balloons create a problem with visibility. Please remember, if you plan to have flowers and/or balloons delivered to school, your student will not be allowed to take them home on the bus. All-in-all, we would encourage you to save your surprises for home, instead of making a delivery to school.
Toothsavers
Toothsavers Dental Program is coming to Longview! If you would like your child to participate in this program, please complete the blue application that was sent home with your child a few weeks ago or go to www.MySchoolDentist.com to sign your child up online.
Counselor Corner
Hello Longview families and friends! Let me tell you how things are going and what is coming up.
This month in February I am looking forward to starting the Second Step Bullying Prevention lessons for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. This week I wrapped up the first lesson with 2nd grade.
Safety Patrol is currently patrolling at the main crosswalk. We strive to create a safe environment for our parents, students, and staff. We want to encourage parents, students, and staff to use the main crosswalk out of safety precautions. Please be patient with our student patrollers as they work hard to maintain safety.
Hawks Points prize drawings will continue to be on Fridays. We are emphasizing our updated HAWKS acronym of Honest, Accountable, Wise, Kind, and Safe. Remind your child that the adults at our school will be looking for students who demonstrate positive behavior.
Physical Education with Mrs. Lacelle
January P.E. Recap
January was a busy month in PE.. We started the month with our bowlers education program. Where students worked on improving their bowling skills and learning about good bowling etiquette. Students also participated in our educational gymnastics units where they learned about body control, how to improve their balance, and worked on improving their muscular strength.
February P.E.
In February students will be learning all about heart health and ways that we can keep our hearts health. Students will learn the importance of their hearts and the healthy choices we can make in order to have strong healthy hearts.
Students kindergarten thru 5th grade will participate in our jump rope unit, which is a favorite here at Longview. Kindergarteners will learn how to turn and correctly jump a jump rope and the other grades will focus on building their skills and work on different jump rope tricks. We also have an endurance club challenge where students will see if they can jump for 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 3 minutes straight without stopping or making a mistake!
MAX YOUR DAY PHOTO WALL
Here at Longview we like to spotlight students that make the choice to be active outside of the school day. In our gym we have a photo wall of students that are being active outside of school. If your child is making the choice to get up and be active, we want to celebrate that! Take a picture and send it to me at jlacelle@mlsd161.org and I will place their picture on the wall.
Being Active
In PE students learn all about the importance of staying active and making healthy choices. During these cold months it can sometimes be difficult to keep kids active. Try to keep your students active and limit screen time. Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, and classroom behavior.
