Dear Petty Families,
I hope you all had a joyful winter break filled with warmth and cherished moments. As we begin the new year of learning and growth, I want to inform you that our students will be participating in the Winter NWEA Map tests sometime between January 19th through January 26th. Please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher if you would like the exact dates for your child's class. These assessments play a crucial role in gauging your child's academic progress and helping us tailor our teaching to their individual needs. We kindly ask for your support in emphasizing the importance of these tests to your child, encouraging them to take the assessments seriously. By doing so, we ensure that we can provide the best possible instruction for each student's journey. Thank you for your continued support.
Respectfully,
Joanna Gerritsen
W.C. Petty Elementary Principal
Test Taking Tips for Parents/Guardians ✏️📚
- Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Many teachers report that students who don't do well on tests haven't gotten enough sleep, and haven't eaten breakfast on the morning of the test. Doing both of these things will ensure that your child is working at full capacity (Narang, 2008).
- Remain positive . Staying calm will help your child stay calm. If they get nervous about the test or is likely to experience anxiety during the test, help them practice some relaxation techniques that they can try once they are taking the test (Narang, 2008).
- Keep to your regular routine. Experts say that dramatic shifts from a child’s routine can have a negative impact on performance. That’s especially true for younger students who take comfort in regular bedtime rituals and meal routines.
- Encourage your child to do their best. Encouraging words and a positive attitude about your child’s test performance will go a long way toward calming test jitters. If you are anxious about your child’s performance, you may send the message that you think he or she is not capable or is unprepared to do well.
- Make sure your child is in attendance and on time on test days. Attendance is important every school day, but especially on test days when students get the opportunity to “show what they know.”

January Lunch Menu 🌮 🍕 🥞
From the Lake County Regional Office of Education....
ReferralGPS
We are committed to creating a culture of well-being of students , staff, parents and community. In an effort to continuously support this commitment, the Lake County Regional Office of Education has entered an agreement with ReferralGPS.
ReferralGPS is a web-based service focused on assisting our students, staff and community in finding local mental-health and substance use related treatment. The service compliments the districts existing systems of support as a tool for student service teams and families to connect with treatment. Along with a searchable database of treatment options, ReferralGPS provides Care Navigation to assist families on triage, appointment setting, and follow up care.
School families may access ReferralGPS in two ways:
1) Contact Student Services for the Lake County school the child attends (social workers , psychologists, counselors) to seek treatment options.
2) Visit the link at https://referralgps.com/find-help/lake to search for treatment resources or connect with a Care Navigator anonymously.
ReferralGPS takes into account all types of private and public insurance including PPO, HMO, Medicaid, and families who are uninsured or underinsured. The platform also filters by age, gender, zip code, and special requests.
ReferralGPS is available for use by district students, staff, and families at no cost. All information entered on the ReferralGPS tool is completely confidential and securely stored.
If you are interested in seeking counseling-related services at this time, please consider visiting https://referralgps.com/find-help/lake or reaching out to the Student Services team.

Information from the Technology Office 💻
iPad concerns The technology department has seen an increase in headphone plugs breaking off in the iPads. Please help us remind students of the proper way to put headphones in the port and to never transport the iPad with the headphones attached. If the piece breaks off inside, please have your son/daughter report it to the teacher ASAP. The sound will not work with this piece broken off in the port. Please encourage your student to be very careful with the headphone jack. Common Sense Media The link below is a great link for parents to help teach their students about proper technology use and how to keep them safe using the internet. Antioch CCSD 34 uses some of the resources from this website as well to help with digital citizenship. Additionally, Common Sense Media has information that can help with internet services or home devices. Please click here to find out if you qualify for free internet.
