Hispanic Heritage Month
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more.
Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. The Latino presence in America spans centuries, predating Spain’s colonization of what is now part of the United States, and they have been an integral part of shaping our nation since the Revolutionary War. Through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Treaty of Paris that followed the Mexican-American and Spanish-American wars, the United States gained territories in the Southwest and Puerto Rico. This incorporated the people of this area into the United States and further expanded the presence of Hispanic Americans.

NOTES:
- Hip hop dance was done for 30yrs celebration of Hip Hop and for Black history month, goes in line with the museum visit, we can do a different dance this year and does not have to be hip hop. Maybe salsa night or something.
- This committee is looking into having diverse cultural music played during PE.
- District wide united week - Oct 14th - we can look at either creating or ask the students to create a slide for every theme of the day.
- The last workshop hosted by DEI group was in 2021 Spring where this committee hired a DEI consultant to talk about systemic racism in the wake of George Floyd which cost $6000 and got sponsorship from Rotary club.
- There's different groups like Backpacks for kids, Food Culver Closet, maybe this committee can promote these resources.
AAPI and Special Ed committee created book read for the classroom with a list of books and activities for the classroom, how do we expand this effort for different cultural group?
Look into having an information session on how to volunteer at school without being intimidated
PRIDE slides created by rainbow club last year, we can ask the students to create slides for different culture or equity week:
