LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL HANNAH JOHNSON
Growing up in the vibrant communities of Riverside County, Hannah Johnson always had a passion for learning and serving others. Her foundational education through the Temecula Valley Unified School District, culminated at Chaparral High School where inspiring teachers significantly shaped her journey. Among them, her AP English Language teacher had a profound impact, igniting her desire to continue her educational path beyond her “small-town” community.
After graduating from the University of California Santa Barbara with degrees in Environmental Sciences and Applied Psychology, Hannah embarked on a life-changing journey with the Peace Corps. For four years, she immersed herself in the culture and languages (Spanish and Guarani) of Paraguay, driven by a desire for a grassroots experience and cultural exchange. This period was transformative, instilling a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives and the importance of patience and understanding.
Returning to the United States, Hannah brought these lessons into her educational career. Hannah began as a Dual Language Teacher, then, Instructional Coach in Banning Unified School District, where she also coordinated History Day and the Spelling Bee. Hannah’s dedication and innovative approach quickly led to her current role as the Assistant Principal at Valley View Elementary in Nuview Union School District.
In her leadership role, Hannah is deeply influenced by her grandmother’s wisdom. Early in her teaching career, her grandmother would ask one simple but profound question each day: “Did you teach one kid - one new thing today?” The focus on “the one” continues to shape Hannah’s approach, influencing her daily interactions and decisions to ensure that students remain at the center of her work.
Outside of her professional life, Hannah is a passionate musician, playing guitar and singing. Her love for music began in 5th grade and has continued to be a significant part of their life. Hannah is also an active runner, currently training for a half marathon in Santa Barbara and the Mission Bay Triathlon. At home, Hannah enjoys the company of Juky (a Guarani word meaning “sweet/salty”), her 12-year-old Paraguayan dog.
As a leader, Hannah Johnson identifies as a Servant Leader, naturally inclined to solve problems and serve others. Her leadership philosophy is encapsulated in the principles of: Listen. Learn. Lead. She believes in the importance of taking a moment to breathe and recharge. She values the importance of pausing and processing to ensure thoughtful leadership.
Looking ahead, Hannah aims to deepen systems awareness, with a particular passion for English Language Development. She aims to connect valuable resources with families to better support her school community. She also finds personal inspiration in Anne Lamott’s books, with Traveling Mercies being a particular favorite. The book's humorous tone underscores themes of faith, peace, and compassion—values that Hannah strives to extend within her school community.
Through her journey, Hannah Johnson has demonstrated a commitment to education, a passion for continuous learning, and a dedication to serving others. Her story is a testament to the impact of service, empathy, and leadership.
