Hello everyone! How do you like my new hat? Actually, I borrowed this from a friend and he’s from Nepal. He said he got it in Nepal, but I‘ve seen this kind of hat in South America, I think, and other places, so maybe it’s popular all over the world. But this one comes from Nepal actually. It looks like it’s going to be a cold winter, so I hope that you can keep warm somehow and that you don’t catch cold and that you get a nice hat to keep your head warm. 「マンション」にはなかなか住めない

12月から、アサミの夫はロサンゼルスでの仕事をはじめます。それに先立って、11月末にロサンゼルスに来てとりあえずホテルに泊まり、家探しをはじめたアサミたち夫婦。

そしてここで、アサミはアメリカでのはじめての英語のミスをおかしてしまいました！

ホテルで教えてもらった不動産屋へ行き、こう言ったのです。

We’re looking for a mansion.

マンションを探しているのですが。

もうおわかりの人もいるかもしれませんね。これを聞いた不動産屋は、とても大きな一戸建ての家の写真を出してきたのです。

日本で指す「マンション」は、英語ではmansionとは言いません。mansion は英語で「大邸宅」を意味することばです。そういえば、ディズニーランドの「ホーンテッドマンション」The Haunted Mansion（幽霊屋敷）も、大邸宅ですよね。

では、日本でいうマンションは、英語でなんといえばいいのでしょう？

これは、apartmentというのが一般的です。賃貸マンション、部屋、アパートなど、すべてapartment でＯＫです。「分譲式のマンション」の場合は、condominium [カンダミーニアム]と言います。

また「高級マンション」と言いたいならluxury apartmentとなります。

ですから逆に、英語で

I live in an apartment.

と言われた場合、「ひとりで、狭いアパートに住んでいるのか･･･」と考えてしまうのは勘違い、ということになります。

ワンポイント

――家の呼び方いろいろ――

● 一戸建て: a house （＊強調したいときはa single houseと言いますが、ふつうは単にa houseと言います）

● ワンルームマンション: studio apartment

● 団地: a housing complex

● 新興住宅地: a new town

What's so funny? American jokes

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night, and go to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend.

"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

"I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes"

replies Watson.

"And what do you deduce from that?"

Watson ponders for a minute.

"Well, Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. But what does it tell you, Holmes?"

Holmes is silent for a moment.

"Watson, you idiot!"

he says.

"Someone has stolen our tent!"

名探偵シャーロック・ホームズとワトソン博士がキャンプ旅行にでかける。野外で美味しい夕食を頂きワインを飲んだ後、テントに戻って寝床に就く。

数時間後にホームズが目を覚ますと忠実な友人をつついて起こす。

「ワトソン君、空を見上げてごらん。そして何が見えるか教えてくれたまえ」

「何千何万という星が見えるが」

と、ワトソン博士。

「そこからどんな推論ができるかね？」

ワトソン博士はしばらく考えた末

「そうだな、天文学的には、あそこには何百万もの銀河があって、ということは何十億もの惑星がありうる。占星術的には、土星がしし座に入っているのが見える。時計学的には、今の時刻は午前3時15分頃だと思う。気象学的には、明日は一日晴天だろう。神学的には、神は全能で我々人間は宇宙の中ではちっぽけで取るに足らない存在だってことだ。じゃあホームズ、君はどんなことを推論できる？」

ホームズはしばらく黙っていたが、

「ワトソン君、君の目は節穴かね？」

とホームズ。

「我々のテントが誰かに盗まれたってことが分からんかね！」

French Toast DayーNovember 28th

フレンチトーストの日ー11月28日

アメリカの朝食の定番といえば、シリアル＆ミルク、オートミール、パンケーキ、ベーコンと玉子等ですが、フレンチトーストも愛されている朝食＆スイーツの一つです。でも、日本人で、フレンチトーストが好きじゃない人はいないような気がします。美味しいフレンチトーストは日本国中にたくさんあるでしょうが、特に、「ホテルオークラ」のフレンチトースト（左上の写真）は絶品で、気絶するほど美味しく、死ぬまでに一度は食べなければならない、と絶賛されています（でも、先にお値段を見て気絶します、きっと...）。

面白いのが、フランスではフレンチトーストではなく"pain perdu/パン・ペルドュ"（失われたパン）と呼ぶそうです。似たようなレシピは5世紀にはローマ帝国で存在していたようですが、ではFrench（フランスの）はどこから来たかと言うと、1724年、米国ニューヨーク州オルバニーの宿屋の主人Joseph French/ジョセフ・フレンチが宿の朝食に提供し、それに自分の苗字を冠してFrench Toast という名をつけた、と言い伝えられています。本当は、McDonald's やDenny'sのように's を付けて「French's Toast」にしなければいけなかったのですが、このジョセフさん、文法が苦手だったようで、所有格の'sを付けるのを知らなかったそうです。

さて、11月28日はフレンチトーストの日です（あくまで米国の話ですが）。そこで、いつもお馴染みCooking with Dog さんの（和風）フレンチトースト、Crouton Crackerjacks さんの（米国風）フレンチトースト、そしてJean-Jacques Bernatさんの（フランス風）フレンチトースト、の作り方をご覧ください。どれも、とても簡単に作れて、お・い・し・そ・う・です。これを見たら、即、自分で作って食べるしかありません！（みな、パンを漬ける時間はそれぞれ短いですが、ホテルオークラのフレンチトーストは片面12時間両面で24時間つけるそうです。お好みで、どちらでもどうぞ）。おまけに、しゃべっている英語も三者三様（日本人風英語、ネイティブ米国英語、フランス人風英語）なので面白いですよ。

今週は、アメリカのインディーズで頑張っているシンガーソングライターReina Del Cid/レイナ・デル・シドの歌でJambalaya/ジャンバラヤをお聞きいただきましょう。ジャンバラヤはカントリーの大御所Hank Williams/ハンク・ウィリアムズが1952年にリリースし、その後カントリー歌手を中心に夥しい数の歌手がカバーしています。日本ではThe Carpenters/カーペンターズのカバーで知られています。皆さんにもお馴染みでしょう。

Jambalaya/ジャンバラヤとは、アメリカ・Louisiana/ルイジアナ州のCajun/ケイジャン料理の１つでコメに肉・野菜を混ぜた、スペインのパエリアの影響を受けた料理です。この地域はフランス領になる前はスペインに領有されていたからです。Cajun/ケイジャンとはルイジアナに住む民族グループで祖先はカナダに住んでいたフランス人たちで、フレンチ・インディアン戦争(1755-1763)でイギリスに負けた後、こちらに移住してきました。今でもケイジャンの爺ちゃん婆ちゃんたちは、アメリカ人でありながらフランス語をしゃべるようです。ケイジャン料理にはスパイシーなものが多く、日本でも以前、KFCケンタッキーフライドチキンが「ケイジャン・ホットチキン」を出したことがありましたっけ（美味しかったのになあ）。

１本目の動画はレイナ・デル・シドとリードギターToni Lindgren/トニー・リングレンのパフォーマンス。トニーのギターがメチャウマです。この動画最後まで見てください。いかにもアメリカンな場面が一瞬展開します。映画Stand by Me/スタンバイミーみたいな。でも、日本ではだめですよ、真似しちゃ。

２本目の動画はSimon & Garfukel/サイモンとガーファンクルのKodachromeをレイナとトニーが歌います。Kodachrome は、Kodak社が製造販売していたカメラフィルムです。途中でレイナがトチッて２人で笑っちゃっています。トニーのギターのうまさがヤヴァイ。
