The Berg Bulletin
Greetings from Principal Lecoe!
Fall is in the air, but we continue to be blessed with beautiful weather! We have taken advantage of the sunny days to practice fire evacuation and three whistle drills in the event of an emergency. This is to ensure students and staff are "prepared and not scared" in the case of a real emergency. Safety is our #1 priority and students and staff have done an amazing job performing our practice safety drills.
As the fall weather creeps in from time to time, please remember to send an extra jacket or sweater to school with your child to ensure he/she is warm enough on the chilly days!
I hope to see you all at Parent Teacher Conferences next week to share your child's goals and progress thus far with you. PT Conferences will be student led, so remember to bring your child with you to conferences so they can share their goals and progress with you!

Dismissal Pick-up
Just a reminder, if you are picking up your child from school, please meet them at the south or north gate for dismissal. This will allow our dismissal staff to pair student(s) up with their pick-up person. Town students that are walking home need to cross the street with an adult crossing guard to ensure safe street crossing. If you need to cross a street that does not have a crossing guard, please let an adult know you need to cross the street and he/she will help you. Also, per the police department we NEED to use the marked cross walks. Please help with this safety measure so all Berg stakeholders stay safe.
Weather Reminder
Fall is here and the days are getting colder. Please send sweaters/coats with students as we move into Fall weather.

National Fire Prevention Week
National Fire Prevention Week will be held October 6-12 this year, with a theme of "Smoke Alarms. Make them work for you!" Thursday, October 12th, the Dickinson Fire Department is holding a special presentation for our K-5 students.
Happy October Everyone,
I just want to inform everyone that Mrs. Urlacher our Behavior Health Specialist is back in the school and is taking over the Classroom SEL lessons for k-2. I will continue teaching grades 3-5. This month students will be finishing up our section on self-awareness and moving into our section on Self-Management. Students will be learning things like how to control emotions, how to deal with stress, etc.
Last month I was able to get into each of the classrooms to inform students about bullying. One of the key takeaways from this lesson was defining what bullying was. We discussed that the 3 parts to bullying are:
It's repeated
It's on purpose
It's hurtful, mean or embarrassing.
Students were also taught the difference between being rude, being mean, and bullying. We have posters all over the school that have these definitions on them to help students recognize the differences.
We also have Chris in the Classroom coming to our school on the afternoon of 10/29 to talk with students about bullying. Chris will also be doing an event in the evening at the Hagen building that all families are welcome to attend. I've attached a flyer with more details about this event.
Red Ribbon Week is going to be on October 28 - November 1. There will be dress-up days for that week (see poster below). Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, smoking, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. For Red Ribbon Week our School Resource Officer will be swinging by the classrooms to chat with students about drug and Halloween safety.
I hope you all have a great month of October!
In the month of October, the North Dakota American Choral Directors Association puts on a children’s choir festival called Surround the State in Song for students in grades 5-7. Students who are able to match pitch, enjoy singing and exhibit good behavior in music class can be invited by their music teacher to attend the festival. The students also have to be willing to practice their music outside of school to prepare for the festival day. This year, Berg Elementary will be represented by Kenley Pierce, Dawson Kubischta, Maliah Beston, Benjamin Bryant, Hadley Kuhn, Madigan Schrum, Nikolai Young, and Emma Propp. The festival will take place on October 12th at Dickinson Middle School and will include a performance that afternoon. Students will be singing in a choir with 60+ other 5th, 6th, and 7th graders from Dickinson and the surrounding area.
As we look ahead to November, our 5th Graders will be performing for our school and their family and friends on November 7th. The performance for the staff and students will take place that afternoon during the school day. The performance for family and friends will take place at 6:30 in the gym right here at Berg. We take the opportunity to honor our Veterans at this performance, so please have students wear red, white, and blue! More information will be coming home about the performance as we grow closer to this event.
