SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
August 11, 2023
Week of Welcome was a success!
The Met just kicked off our school year with our annual Week of Welcome, and it was a big success! Students had time to meet each other, build advisory culture, engage in unique workshops, and enjoy pizza and student-baked cookies at our closing lunch. We also celebrated the chance to meet so many of our parents during our New Family Mixer that opened WOW. Thanks to our parents, students, and staff for coming together to strengthen our community! Here are some photos from WOW!

School Schedule
Monday/Wednesday/Friday Schedule - 8:30am to 3:15 pm
This year we transitioned to a 5 period day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All students begin in Advisory (period 1) and then proceed to their remaining four classes the rest of the day.
Tuesday/Thursday Schedule - 8:30am to 11:30am
All students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am to work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus.
Please refer to the Daily Schedule. Please check with your student’s advisor if you have any questions about your student’s schedule.
Student PLANNERS
Each Met student received a Met Planner to be used throughout the year. Teachers are reinforcing their use by referring to them daily and encouraging students to record their assignments. Important dates, contact information, and a few fun jokes are embedded into the planners. Please ask to see your student's planner and support their use. Students are expected to be responsible with their planners and keep track of them. Replacement planners cost $10, and are subject to availability.
Recruiting for School Site Council (SSC)
We are now taking nominations for parents/guardians and students to be on our School Site Council (SSC)! Are you looking for a chance to provide meaningful input on the Met’s mission of supporting every student, one student at a time? Then join our SSC! The SSC is a group of staff, students, and parents/guardians who meet regularly throughout the school year to review school data and make decisions regarding our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), with specific oversight over budget allocations for our Title I and LCFF funding. Parent/guardian and student representation on the SSC ensures that your voices are included in our decision-making processes. Please email Principal Fung at rfung@sandi.net with nominations for the SSC. Self-nominations are welcome! Once we have a slate of nominees, we will announce election information. Thank you for your support!
Senior Early Dismissal Policy
As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of regular school hours. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.

Picture Day
Picture Day is coming on Friday, September 1. Make-up Picture Day will be Friday, October 6.
Mental Health Supports
We will be supported again this year by a mental health clinician from Wellness Together. This year, our clinician will be on campus on Mondays from 8:00 to 2:30. Students who are in need of mental health services may be referred to the clinician.
Food on Campus
Food options on campus will be limited prior to Mesa’s fall semester start date of August 21. To help you prepare your student, please note the following scheduled food service options:
Terrace Cafe (Starbucks in I-400) is open 8:00am-4:30pm from Monday-Thursday. Options include snacks and light meals (cold sandwiches and salads).
Mesa Commons Grill is open Monday-Thursday for breakfast from 7:30am-10am, and for lunch from 11:00am to 1:30pm.
All food services are currently CLOSED on Fridays.
SDUSD sack lunches are available to any student who requests them. Please email shoffman1@sandi.net if you would like to have your student added to the list to receive school lunch.
Students are always welcome to bring lunch from home.
Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from online delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on an atypical campus, we are technically considered a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed on and off campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, stay healthy, and stay focused on their studies!
Attendance and Absences
Regular and timely attendance at school and internships is one of the most important factors for your student’s success! Students who are regularly tardy or absent from one or more classes are missing valuable learning time, and as such, we will be contacting parents/guardians for your support if your student is struggling with attendance.
If you need to excuse your student from any part of their classes or internships, please contact Ms. Suzana Valis at svalis@sandi.net or 619-388-2529.
If your student needs to miss any part of their internship for any reason, including illness, it is the student’s responsibility to reach out to their mentor as early as possible to inform them of the absence or lateness. The parents/guardians must additionally contact the school to inform us that the student is missing internship.
Our attendance protocols exist to keep students safe, both on and off campus, and to ensure that students are here to get the support they need to succeed in their learning. Your support for your student’s attendance ensures that they are getting the learning experience they deserve.

Join our Foundation!
This is a great time for interested parents to join our SD Met Foundation board! We are recruiting for parents and family members who would like to participate in activities related to fundraising for our school, developing our parent community, and supporting various ways to improve the learning environment for every student. If you are interested in learning more about our Foundation or would like details about joining the board for the 2023-2024 school year, please reach out to our Foundation President, Justin Schiffer (jschiffer@sandi.net) or Principal Robert Fung (rfung@sandi.net). Even if you are not able to join our board, you can always support our school by making a donation to the Foundation at this link. Our Foundation raises money to support our students, with all proceeds going directly to supporting supplies and resources for teaching and learning. Please share this link with your friends and network! Thank you!
