September 15, 2024
A Note from Ms. Thomas and Mr. Jondle
Dear Indian Mound Middle School Students and Families,
We’ve just wrapped up our second week of school, and we couldn’t be more excited to share some of the incredible things happening in our classrooms. Our students and staff are working hard, and it’s inspiring to see the enthusiasm and engagement in learning already taking place.
On Friday, we had the pleasure of visiting several classrooms, and we want to highlight some of the wonderful things we observed:
- Math discussions about proportional relationships—students were diving into the real-world connections of numbers and equations.
- Creative use of graphic organizers to help structure learning across subjects.
- A project involving planet creation—the imagination and scientific understanding combined was fantastic!
- Venn diagram practice helping students make connections between different concepts.
- Learning about Otzi, the famous iceman, bringing history to life.
- Students mastering Canvas, our online learning platform, and showing impressive independence.
- Understanding food webs and ecosystems, building foundational science skills.
- Reviewing task lists to stay organized and on top of assignments.
- Engaged students in independent reading, fostering a love for literature.
- A fun, collaborative game in PE, showing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Students responsibly using hall passes to transition between activities.
- And I was especially proud to see our students walking to lunch with their hands to themselves—way to go!
Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this exciting school year. We’re off to a fantastic start, and we look forward to sharing more of the amazing things happening at our school in the weeks to come.
Warm regards,
Jamie Thomas, Principal
Brett Jondle, Associate Principal

❗❗PLEASE READ❗❗MHS Home Game Expectations from Officer Zietsma and IMMS Admin
Dear McFarland Families,
We want to address some concerns from last Friday's football game. It was reported by Officer Zietsma, MSD School Resource Officer, that many middle school students were not following the expected behavior guidelines. Officer Zietsma witnessed throwing items off the bleachers, shoving, playfighting, playing football behind the stands, using the IMMS playground, and attempting to access equipment from the locked shed. Below are the Home Game Expectations. Please pay special attention attention to the following:
Elementary, intermediate and middle school students need to be accompanied by an adult in order to gain entrance into the stadium. Adults bringing elementary and intermediate students must sit with those students during the game. Middle school students accompanied by an adult can sit at the top of the designated student section or sit with the adult that brought them.
“Carry-ins” by all spectators will not be allowed. Items include bottled or canned beverages, soda fountain cups, footballs, frisbees, etc.
All students are expected to be in the stadium seats cheering for the Spartans unless they are using the restroom or concessions. For everyone’s safety, no football games or similar activities that would encourage running and throwing of objects are allowed. It is expected that our students are NOT playing on the IMMS playground or running around the IMMS school grounds. Re-entry to the event is NOT allowed.
It's important to remember that while our high school football games are a wonderful community event, they are intended as an opportunity to support our Spartans by watching and cheering for the team.
HOME GAME EXPECTATIONS
Lloyd Schneider Stadium / William J. Rice Field
McFarland High School athletes enjoy positive support from their fellow students, parents, and the community. We continue to welcome elementary, intermediate and middle school students to the high school games and we want to create the best possible circumstances for their safety.
In order to maintain a safe environment at our home games, the following practices will be enforced:
Elementary, intermediate and middle school students need to be accompanied by an adult in order to gain entrance into the stadium. Adults bringing elementary and intermediate students must sit with those students during the game. Middle school students accompanied by an adult can sit at the top of the designated student section or sit with the adult that brought them. It is important that school personnel managing the event have the ability to contact an adult on site if there is a concern.
“Carry-ins” by all spectators will not be allowed. Items include bottled or canned beverages, soda fountain cups, footballs, frisbees, etc.
Backpacks and large bags are not allowed. Purses are subject to search.
Always exhibit good sportsmanship:
Be quiet and respectful during the National Anthem and School Songs.

August 24, 2024 Advisory from US Surgeon General
A few weeks ago, the US Surgeon General published an Advisory about the challenges of parenting in today's world. In the document he starts by saying, "Parents often say parenting is one of the best jobs but also one of the hardest." He goes on to explain that, "In addition to the traditional challenges of parenting—protecting children from harm, worrying about finances, managing teenagers who are searching for independence—there are new stressors that previous generations didn’t have to consider. These include the complexity of managing social media, parents’ concerns about the youth mental health crisis, and an epidemic of loneliness that disproportionately affects young people and parents, just to name a few."
The published advisory goes into detail about how parents can navigate some of these challenges and provides tips that can be helpful. Over the next few weeks, we will dive into sections of this advisory to highlight some helpful suggestions.
One of the stressors parents face include parents feeling isolation and loneliness. "In a 2021 survey, approximately 65% of parents and guardians, and 77% of single parents in particular, experienced loneliness." This can lead to mental health struggles of your own. In the advisory, they offer a few suggestions for communities, schools, and parents. The biggest suggestion was to find opportunities to connect with other parents who are likely going through similar challenges. The Mental Health America offers opportunities to connect with fellow parents and caregivers in your local community or virtually. We could also start to provide opportunities for McFarland parents and caregivers to connect locally. If this is something that you would be interested in participating in you can fill out THIS google form so we can gauge our community interest. You can also reach out to any of the student services staff members at IMMS or our other McFarland schools.

IXL Support with ELA Curriculum
We are again using IXL to support our ELA curriculum this year. In particular, students will spend time working specifically on the ELA language standards, focusing on grammar and mechanics. Your child has access to this online program at home in which they can work on the assigned language skills or other ELA skills such as: reading, writing and vocabulary.
How Do Students Access IXL at Home?
Click on IMMS Favs Folder via their school issued chromebook
Find IXL, click on it
Sign in via their google sign on
Top Ways to Use IXL at Home:
Encourage your student to visit their Recommendations wall for helpful review or new challenges. These skills are picked just for your student!
Check on your student’s progress by clicking on Analytics in their account. This allows you to see what they have been working on and their progress.
What is IXL’s SmartScore?
The SmartScore is the best possible measure of how well your child understands a skill. It factors in question difficulty, answer accuracy, and consistency. Students should aim for a SmartScore of at least 80. This is NOT a percentage. Unlike percentage-based scoring, the SmartScore is truly smart. Even if a student gets a question wrong, it’s always possible to reach a 100. A SmartScore of 80 - 90 shows that the student has a strong understanding of a skill. All progress in each area is always automatically saved allowing students to pause their practice.
McFarland Schools Equity Collective

Health Services
WI School Immunization Requirements & Vaccine Clinics
Every school in Wisconsin is required by law to report their student’s vaccination status to the local health department 30 days after the start of school. See WI Student Immunization Law by Age/Grade Requirements. Your student’s health assistant will be sending out legal notices at that time if the school has no record or if your student’s immunization status is “behind schedule”. If you are not sure if your student is up to date with immunizations, you can contact your doctor's office/My chart or you can look them up on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry using your child's social security number and/or Medical ID. If you need access to a waiver (for personal, religious or health reasons) for any vaccination, please utilize the student immunization record (English, Spanish) see step 4 and return it to your student’s health office.
Vaccine Clinics: Public Health Madison & Dane County is partnering with Madison Metropolitan School District and SSM Health in a few weeks to offer more school vaccine clinics to get students up to date on their school vaccines in time for the 2024-25 school year. These clinics will take place at the below times and dates in Madison.
