On Thursday, Oct. 25, 150 students gathered in the gym for a Halloween dance in support of Hailey Holder and her family. Hailey has missed the last year of school due to trying to survive leukemia, going through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Hailey was able to attend the dance, her first social outing since last year. She had a blast! Students played games, ate food and danced the night away. All the money raised from the dance will be given to the Holder family to put towards their medical expenses. The Haileyween Dance was surely a night to remember. This event was planned and carried to fruition by senior Lily Kollross. Many thanks go to Lily and DECA, NHS, Brickettes, the Brickie Leaders and all who helped make this night a success.)

The Hobart JV and Varsity Cheerleaders spent two weekends in October volunteering for the American Cancer Society. The girls spent Sunday, October 7th at Coffee Creek Nature preserve in Chesterton, Indiana at the Porter County Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The very next weekend on Sunday, October 14th, the girls headed to Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville, Indiana to volunteer at the Lake County Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. At both events, the girls helped with registration of participants, helped lead prevail warm activities, performed, created cheers for survivors, and cheered on the walkers for the duration of each walk. The girls volunteered 6 hours each at both locations hoping to make a difference in our local communities and for those who are currently fighting or are survivors of Breast Cancer.

As you know, the ISTEP test is a state assessment that students are required to pass in order to graduate high school.

We will be administering a re-take of this test in November, after Thanksgiving, for students who have not yet passed.

If your child has not passed the ISTEP, he/she is currently not on track to graduate. Like you, we want to make every effort possible to help your child succeed.

In order to help prepare your child for this test, we are offering after-school tutoring on the following days beginning on 10/16/18:

Tuesdays: Math 2:40-4:00

Thursdays: Math and English 2:40-4:00

It is extremely important that your child attend these sessions, as they will help prepare him/her for the upcoming test. These sessions are extremely important if your child is pursuing an ISTEP waiver for graduation, which can be discussed with your child's counselor.

Flu- Don’t Waste Fall By Being Sick. Get A Flu Shot! It’s Super Quick! Don’t forget to get your flu shot and stay protected. Contact your healthcare provider or make an appointment at our Brickie Clinic 219-945-9383.

Vaccinations- All students are required to have up to date immunizations- Letters will be going home November 1st for student that are not up to date on their shots! Deadline for vaccinations are November 30,2018 .Make sure you send the records to the school nurse so we can update our records.

Health Conditions- If your student has a specific health condition or needs special care during the school day such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform your school nurse and provide your nurse with a care plan. Individual health care plans help keep your student safe and healthy.

Sick students- Please keep all sick children home from school- this includes fever greater than 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea. If you are unsure please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice.

Head Lice- It’s that time of year where our students break out their coats, scarves and hats. Please encourage your child not to share such items as hats, scarves, brushes or any personal items. Lice is not a danger to your child’s health, it is simply an annoying problem that comes around this time of year, so no need to panic. Please know that anyone and everyone can get lice. Getting lice has nothing to do with being clean or dirty; it only has to do with the fact that you are human. It is very important to check your family for lice this time of year regularly. If you find any live lice or eggs, it is absolutely necessary to treat each “infected” person, but more importantly, you must notify the school so that we can effectively and confidentially assist you with monitoring. The school nurse can assist you with proper treatment options as well as identify and demonstrate for you what to do.

Clothing- Please make sure your student has an extra change of clothing in his/her backpack in case needed for unseen circumstances that may arise during the school day.

Hobart High School is offering tutoring for students on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning September 10th. The sessions are conducted by a certified staff member and provide students additional assistance in core academic areas. Sessions will begin at 2:45pm in the media center and conclude at 4:00pm. Tutoring is available for English and all levels of math.

TRANSPORTATION: Transportation is available from the tutoring sessions. If students would like to use bus transportation, they need to fill out a transportation request form available in the media center. Please allow 24 hours to process the application for transportation once it is received. Students who plan to ride the bus home from tutoring must sign up in the media center by 12:00 p.m. of each day they wish to attend.
