Principal's Notes
While I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a four day institute for principals at Harvard this week focusing on Accelerating Instruction, the staff and students carried on with teaching and learning, and in 3rd and 4th grade, they carried on with MCAS testing. MCAS testing went very smoothly and from all accounts, the students felt very prepared and gave it their best effort. 5th grade will take MCAS in ELA next week.
On Monday, students met with Connections groups to learn about another Habit of Mind - Questioning and Posing Problems. They read the book Papa's Mechanical fish by Candace Fleming and worked together to solve the famous Farmer and the River problem. Connections groups worked to figure out how the farmer could get animals and rice over to the other side of the river in the fewest number of trips. This would be a great puzzle to ponder as a family since some groups were not able to solve it during the Connections time. Try this one here at home with the template attached to the newsletter.
Thank you for participating in the Parent/Teacher Conferences this week! We hope you found these conferences to be helpful in learning more about where your child's strengths are and ideas to help them set goals for the remainder of the year.
Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Robin MacDonald on her upcoming retirement at the end of the school year. Mrs. MacDonald has worked as a speech and language therapist at Cole School since her hiring in 2014. In total, Mrs. MacDonald has worked in education for the last 39 years - amazing! We wish her well on the next chapter of her life and thank her for her service to the Cole School community.
We also wish Mrs. Michelle Kenerson a wonderful upcoming retirement! Mrs. Kenerson has worked as a special education aide and kindergarten aide at Cole School for more than 24 years. We are so thankful for her many years of support and wish her joy and happiness in her retirement years!
If you haven't yet read The Anxious Generation and would like to, we have copies available for borrowing in the Cole School office. We are happy to lend them out!
In the meantime, the author, Jonathan Haidt, has released his presentation to the general public for free. The video is about 47 minutes long and contains much of the research and findings shared in the book.

Habits of Mind
Questioning and Posing Problems
We'll be starting to learn about a new Habit of Mind on Monday at our Connections meeting. We'll focus on Questioning and Posing Problems. Students will hear the story Papa's Mechanical Fish by Candace Fleming and work collaboratively to identify problems, ask questions, and seek solutions for the famous Farmer and River puzzle.
The Institute for Habits of Mind (habitsofmindinstitute.org) offers more information on how to strengthen this Habit of Mind with your children and for yourself.
Asking questions and posing problems can be a signal of your genuine curiosity and commitment to wanting to understand what your family member may be experiencing. An attitude of curiosity acknowledges that there are usually many different contributing factors to the situation, and that we don’t yet know all of them. If we approach an encounter with our family member with curiosity instead of certainty, it is important to use an invitational tone when questioning — one that invites thinking. It is easy for a child to feel defensive and shut down rather than feeling comfortable sharing their thoughts.
Here are some strategies that may be helpful to invite your child’s thinking.
Use tentative language that implies that you do not know the answer to what is being asked:
- How might we…
- When could…
- Perhaps it might be…
- What do you imagine an alternative might be…
Use plurals to indicate that there might be more than one answer to the question or approaches to a solution:
- What are some strategies…
- What are some of the goals you are considering…
Use invitational sentence stems before asking a question to offer a suggestion about the kind of thinking you think would be most helpful:
- As you analyze this problem…?
- As you consider…?
- As you evaluate…?
- As you compare…?
Counselor's Corner
This week, we talked about the courage to be yourself and to be kind to others! Kindergarten heard and discussed "Sheila Rae the Brave," 1st and 2nd grade passed a ball and gave compliments to each other, grades 2 and 3 reworded common phrases like "Give me that!" to make them kinder, and grades 4 and 5 role played using I-statements to respond to unkindness with kindness. We'll continue next week!
