Fall Conferences
🍎 Fall conferences will be held this week on Tuesday, October 1st and Wednesday October 2nd. All conferences will be held in ROOM 13, unless otherwise arranged.
🗓️ For Tuesday's conferences, the sixth grade team has scheduled specific times to meet with some families. If Mrs. Roussety has reached out to schedule a time to meet with you, please confirm your appointment ASAP so we can plan accordingly. Thank you!
⏰ On Wednesday, the sixth grade team will be be available from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (Dinner Break 5-5:30 PM) to meet with any of our sixth grade families. Conferences will be held open house style, meaning first come, first served. We will do our absolute best to keep our meetings running swiftly so that we can meet with all parties interested. If you arrive to room 13 on Wednesday and the team is already conferencing with a family, please wait outside of the room and we'll be with you shortly.
🏐 A Special Note for Wednesday Conferences:
Mrs. McKinley will have limited availability on open conference night (October 2) as she will be coaching our 8th grade volleyball team as they host Charlevioix. She will be stopping down to her classroom and trying to meet with as many parents as she can throughout the evening. Please reach out to Mrs. McKinley if you feel the need to schedule a conference outside of this time.
🧡 We look forward to seeing you and discussing your child's progress and success in sixth grade! See you soon!
Language Arts
🐎 This week we will be reading the informational article, “Horses as Healers Around the World” by Carolyn Cory Scoppettone. In this text she explains how horses can provide therapy for people with a wide range of challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, cerebral palsy, and autism. Examples from therapeutic riding programs support the idea that horses can be “partners in healing.”
📌 In this lesson students will:
Determine the central idea of a text.
Read and comprehend literary nonfiction.
Analyze how part of a text contributes to its structure.
Determine an author’s purpose.
Use Latin roots to determine word meaning.
Write informative texts.
Gather information from multiple sources.
📖 Homework:
15-20 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.
Work that students are unable to complete during class.
Work that students miss when they are out of school for sickness, travel, etc.
Test Retake Assignments
Math
📝 Remember their homework comes home on Monday and is due on Friday!
Science
💯 We worked hard last week finishing up with the reasons we have seasons. Study guides went home last Monday and with the study session on Thursday, we were ready to take the big test on Friday. Overall, your children did a wonderful job. Students who received less than 70% can retake the test if they choose to. They need to bring home a consent form that you need to sign. Then, they need to prove they are doing additional studying by showing me their completed Science Journals and study notecards. Students have one week to complete the above and retake the test.
🌖 This week our focus is the moon! We will be discussing ancient myths of the moon. Have you heard of any? I'm sure you have! We will be looking at some underlying characteristics of the moon. We will also be getting into some interesting facts that I'm sure will amaze! By the end of this week, we should be charting the moon phases in class and learning about its cycle. You might want to observe the moon with your child at home. Ask them what they learned that day; maybe even you might be amazed!
Social Studies
🗺️ This week, we continue our in-depth exploration of ALL THINGS MAPS! Students will analyze several new maps and explore the reasons why maps of the same place can vary so much depending on the cartographer's purpose, the spatial scale of the map, and the audience's perspective. We will also look at various map projections, explore their strengths and weaknesses, and discuss the everso amusing topic: "All maps are wrong!"
💯 GRADES:
I have begun entering the first grades of the marking period. Please check PowerSchool for the most up-to-date status of your child's assignment completion and scores. Any missing assignments will be entered as 0, but will be changed as soon as they are turned in and scored. Always check the assignment details and comments sections of PowerSchool to see specific information about the assignment, the individual student's performance, and/or retake options.
📋 The following assignments were entered recently:
- Continents and Oceans Quiz
- Using Sections of the Atlas Worksheet
- Create a Map Projects (Coming soon! See below.)
🧭 The students' most recent assignment was to demonstrate their understanding of the main map elements by creating a map of their own. The instructions: Create a map of any place, real or imagined! It turns out, these students are amazing cartographers! We had impressively detailed maps of Local neighborhoods, backyards, and several of Rodes Field. We also had some very creative takes on various landscapes from video games, secret islands, and even a Dance Land and Country Music Land. Needless to say, it was a great way to end the week and stretch our minds in a new way. Most students completed the assignment in class on Friday, but some needed the weekend to finish up. Therefore, I'll wait to enter those grades until mid-week.
📸 Going Old School!
Last week, students were able to explore my extensive collection of old, paper maps. Some of them reported that they had never seen or held one in real life! It was so funny to see their reactions when they realized how large some of the maps were when opened up. This exploration was a great way to practice spotting the map elements we have been studying. The biggest challenge of this activity was definitely folding the maps back up when we were done with them! 😜
Spanish
💯 They will have a quiz soon. TBA.

If you’re interested in volunteering, we’ve made it easy to sign up! Be sure to submit a Volunteer Consent Form (link is below) to your student’s office. Whether you can give an hour or help with a big event, every bit of help is appreciated.
Feel free to sign up for specific events via the links below. We also invite you to join us at our PTO meetings, where we discuss upcoming events and ways to support the school.
If your family would prefer to support the PTO through a direct donation instead of participating in specific fundraisers, we’ve made that option available as well. Every donation goes directly to funding programs, events, and resources for our students and teachers. You can find our Alternative Fundraiser Form here, and any amount is greatly appreciated!
Be sure to join our Facebook group, to stay up to date!
We look forward to working with all of you to make this a memorable and successful school year. Thank you for your time and support!
