As report cards come out this week, here are some tips to help students with homework: According to Gail Belsky, there are six ways kids may like doing homework differently:

• Moving Around: Some kids, especially kids with who are active, need to stand or move to use up extra energy. Moving around actually helps them focus.
• Leaning on Elbows: It may not look like a great position for concentrating. But leaning on elbows can provide sensory input for kids who seek it.
• Wearing Headphones: For some kids, headphones can tune out distracting noise. For others, music or other sounds add some needed stimulation.
• Body Doubling: Just like some kids need quiet to concentrate, others do better with people around. For some kids, it can be a form of “body doubling.”
• Relaxing on the couch: Being relaxed doesn’t mean kids aren’t working hard. Lying on a couch or curling up in a chair may be more comfortable than sitting straight up.
• Changing locations: Changing locations can provide a brain break when homework is hard or frustrating. It helps kids reset and get back to work.

What is important for student success with homework is to establish a routine with your child so that they have time and space to complete their homework assignments.

The DCSD Student Advisory Council is presenting an Opiod Awareness lesson to all 8th grade students. The PK8 presentation is on February 4th. If you prefer your student not attend, please come by the office to fill out an opt-out form.

Friday Teacher Snack Sign-Ups

Parents, our PPO organizes a snack for school staff every Friday. Parents sign up and bring in treats for roughly 40 staff members on Friday mornings. There are still a few open dates in December. Please offer to help by signing up for one of the available Fridays at this link:

Paonia K-8 has several employment opportunities currently:

• A 7-hour teacher aide position in our Special Education department.
• A 4-hour kitchen staff employee
• DCSD is always seeking regular and substitute bus drivers.
