Founders Memorial School News: February 21, 2025
From the Principal
Dear FMS Families,
I can’t remember a year in my (many) years in education in which we have had three snow days in three weeks! I hope your children have enjoyed playing around in the waist-deep piles we have sticking around.
Our winter break is next week. Enjoy time with your family and friends and relax. This is a great time to encourage your children to read, even just 20 minutes per day makes a huge difference and maintains this healthy habit.
See you in March!
Sara Jablonski
FMS Principal
Family Conferences
We look forward to seeing you at our Family Conferences in March! This is an important time to learn of your child’s progress at school from their teachers. Conferences are scheduled for March 4th, as well as other times offered by your child’s teacher.
FMS is Hiring!
We are looking to fill several open positions at FMS. Working at our school is a great way to connect with children, help our school community and be connected with all the goings-on at school. It is fulfilling and fun, and we truly have a great team of educators here!
Please reach out to Sara Jablonski with any questions.
Spirit Wear Shop
The FMS Spirit Wear Shop is open until March 7th!
Our Read-a-Thon was a Success - Thank You!
FMS students crushed our school-wide goal by reading a collective 234,000 minutes this year! This is a record for our school! We are so proud of you all and want to thank families for helping track minutes at home and encouraging your students to read. All this reading helps students form great reading habits, which is important for many reasons.
We celebrated with a school-wide popsicle party! The PTO made it extra special for the following winning classes in each grade and gifted them some awesome reading flashlights and small goodies:
• 3rd Grade - Mrs. Guerino
• 4th Grade - Mrs. McCarthy
• 5th Grade - Ms. Walsh
Keep Reading - The Benefits of Reading 20 Minutes a Day
There are so many reasons to read every single day. From building focus in a world where attention spans are becoming shorter to nurturing imagination and creativity, reading is a fundamental skill with lasting benefits.
Students who read just 20 minutes a day outside of school encounter an average of 1.8 million words each year.
💓Building Empathy
Through reading, students meet characters from different backgrounds and circumstances. Researchers have found that students who read literary fiction were better able to empathize with people’s thoughts and emotions.
🧠Sharpening Reading Comprehension
Becoming a better reader takes practice! Reading a variety of texts and genres sharpens comprehension skills, especially when students annotate as they read.
The Read-a-Thon helped us all build strong reading habits, and we hope those habits continue over break!
Keep reading, FMS!
-Mrs. Biggs
