- KayeLee Martens, senior at Wayland Union High School.
Recognition of High School All State Swim Team Members
- WUHS Swim Teams had 7 athletes qualify for state finals and all placed within their events. This is an exciting year of celebration for the team. The team had a record of 4-1 in conference, the overall record was 7 - 3. The team finished 2nd at conference, out of 12 events they took first place in 8 of them, finishing 6th overall at the State Competition.

- 200 Yard Individual Medly (Jasinski) - 16th
- 50 Yard Freestyle (L. Wolf) - State Champion!
- 100 Yard Freestyle (Antel) - 15th; (L. Wolf) - State Champion!
- 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (T.Wolf, DeWeerd, Jasinski, Antel) - 6th
- 100 Yard Breaststroke (Antel) - 16; (T. Wolf) - 11th
- 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (L. Wolf, Hudson, Reed, Antel) - 8th
Recognition of High school Debate Team Members
- WUHS debate team had 15 active members this year, all 15 members finished in the top 20. The team had the determination to do something very difficult and excelled while doing it, earning the league championship.
Student Board Members Report
- Ava Makowski and Summer Morrison shared that student council has begun planning for Coaches vs Cancer and the Red Glass movement, both of which will be charity basketball games. National Honor Society treated high school staff to cookies and will be delivering letters from Santa's Elves this week to elementary students. Thespian society was able to meet and work with thespians around the state and professionals. The music department have recently had concerts, participated in Art Hop and participated in the Wayland Christmas parade. Finally, they mentioned that winter sports are all off to a great start!
High School Building Report
- The high school kicked off their building report with a live performance by the Jazz Band, directed by Kelli Smith. Principal DiCesare continued by recognizing the staff members that were able to attend the meeting. Scott Gunderson, art teacher at the HS, shared a video he made that incapsulated what it's like to be a member of WUHS, highlighting students and staff, both in academics and extracurriculars. DiCesare continued on to discuss the impact Capturing Kids Hearts has had on the school culture. DiCesare also mentioned different programs the high school has to offer such as academic support through learning labs and FUTURES as a way to end the school year. Student council members then talked about different activities they take on throughout the year such as Freshman Orientation, homecoming week, "Family, Friends, and Heroes" charity event, harvest hop, Wayland Christmas Food Basket Drive, and Red Glasses Movement. Lastly, data was given to demonstrate how the attendance at the high school has increased and the negative behaviors have decreased.
Committee Meeting Report - Fine Arts Committee
- Becky Hohnke highlighted that the fine arts programs have all had a very successful year so far between performances, competitions, and learning opportunities. The program would love to update instruments, uniforms, and add another staff member to support in the FAC throughout the day.
Committee Meeting Report - Facilities and Finance Committee
- Peter Zondervan stated that most projects have been completed, but remaining projects will be tackled during winter break. Some projects that have been accomplished are pool maintenance, painting projects, Pine Street parking lot lights, updated intercom, Dorr Elementary signage updates, and roofing repairs. Some future repairs are updating Middle School flooring, roofing, turf, baseball/softball field fencing. The committee would like a future discussion on how to maintain the pool to the best of our abilities. Zondervan ended by stating that revenues are up this year, due to grants, per pupil foundation, but expenses are equally as high.
Governance Team Good News
- Becky Hohnke welcomed Jeff Koon as a new member of the school board team. She appreciated the support that basketball students gave to younger basketball players at assessments. She was also excited to have been a part of the Secret Santa Shop at Pine Street Elementary last week. Today was Norm Taylor's birthday. Tim Reeves mentioned his enjoyment in riding the smoothie bike at Steeby Elementary last week. Peter Zondervan would also like to welcome Jeff Koon to the board.
Public Comment
Administration Reports
- Pat Velie gave budget versus actual report for December 12, 2022. Velie also mentioned the official fall student count which was 2,823.7. Lastly, Velie gave a pool operational and maintenance cost comparison between previous years and what is anticipated for this year.
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction
- Teresa Fulk discussed the before and after school programming that all schools are implementing to better support their students. Fulk mentioned that right after break, testing will begin to evaluate the academic needs of students.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves had 3 citizens from the Gun Lake Tribe approach him about a celebration occurring in January, which they would like to use our facilities to host. He is also mentioned that he will be attending a city meeting on December 13, 2022 where the discussion will focus on allowing 3 - 5 marijuana facilities to set up shop in Wayland. Reeves will be in attendance to understand the thought process the committee has as to where these business can be located.
Strategic Plan
- The strategic plan consists of 5 target goals, which the governance team has chosen. Each goal contains 4 - 7 objectives that correspond to how to achieve these goals. The plan will be discussed at a meeting in January.
New Business - Discussion Items
- Pat Velie discussed projects that have been tackled throughout the year such as additional mulch added to playgrounds, geothermal system maintenance, roofing updates, central receiving metal doors, updated intercom systems and CCA wing carpet being replaced. These projects will take place during the break. Next year the fund will continue to support playground repairs, repairing roofing, pool maintenance, district-wide parking lot striping, windows, and softball/baseball field fencing.
22 - 23 General Fund Budget Revisions
- Pat Velie discusses that it's the time of year where the district reviews the past 6 months and plans for the next 6 months. The district has applied for several grants throughout the months. Velie also claimed that revenues are meeting the expenditures, but the district does still need to remain careful when it comes to the budget.
22 - 23 Food Service Budget
- Pat Velie stated that food service is seeing an interesting year, with the breakfast program down significantly, and the lunch program being consistent with where we were pre-pandemic. The biggest issue for food service currently is the high cost of food.
22 -23 Student Activities Fund Budget Revisions
- Pat Velie mentions that the student activities fund budget is the money the students raise and spend for themselves.

Board Topics
Becky Hohnke wanted to thank the High School for the presentation and for hosting the meeting. She also throughly enjoyed the video created by Scott Gunderson. Hohnke also wanted to congratulate KayeLee Martens on herart work for the District Christmas Card Contest.
Jeff Koon stated that he is humbled to be a part of the group, and looks forward to the next four years.
Theresa Dobry stated that while it still stings that her kids are no longer a part of the Wayland School District, she is still thrilled that her children were able to be part of such a wonderful building.
Dan Cassini enjoys the leadership and hard work that is demonstrated throughout the high school. He would like to thank the staff for everything they do, running a school takes a lot of teamwork. He is really excited for the next couple of months to see all the hard work throughout the district pay off.
Peter Zondervan said that he owes Tim Reeves an ugly Christmas sweater. He enjoyed hearing from students about the positives changes in the high school. He would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
Janel Hott was absent for the meeting.
