Dear Brown MS Community,
As we approach this holiday weekend, I would like to wish all of our community members that are celebrating Rosh Hashanah (The Jewish New Year) a happy holiday. Rosh Hashanah begins on Sunday night and there is no school on Monday to honor this holiday. To all who are celebrating, I wish
"L'shana tovah u’metukah" which means "for a good and sweet year".
This morning we held our safety drills (evacuation, shelter-in-place and lockdown) for the whole school. Representatives from the Newton Fire Department and our School Resource Officer, Zoe Lazarakis, were here to assist and support. They were impressed with how quickly students evacuated the building and how well the students followed directions. I was truly proud of our students. We will continue to practice these drills occasionally throughout the school year.
My big plan for this weekend is to get my flu shot and the newest Covid vaccine. Not an exciting weekend, but rest and relaxation is on my "to do" list. I encourage you and your family to receive these vaccines as well so we can continue to stay healthy as the days grow colder.
Finally, we look forward to welcoming you all to Brown for our in person Back To School Night this coming Wednesday from 6:30 - 9:00. Details are below. Enjoy the long weekend!
Best,
Kim Lysaght, Principal

PTO Welcome Back Picnic - a BIG success
We owe a big THANK YOU to our PTO committee. They put on an amazing Welcome Back Picnic for the entire Brown MS community this past Tuesday, Sept. 20. There was pizza, chips, cookies, lawn games and a terrific playlist of songs. Despite having to change the date due to rain there was a terrific turn out of students and parents. Here are some pictures.
PTO - Get Involved!
During the picnic there were sign ups available to get involved in the PTO.
We still have a number of openings for parents to take on a role (big or small) with the PTO. Please consider helping out this year. This is a year where we would like to rebuild community after two difficult years of Covid restrictions. Getting involved is a way to get to know other parents in the community. Please click on the link below for more information about how to get involved.

Back to School Night - Wednesday, September 28 6:30 - In Person!
Below is the generic schedule for Back to School Night for each grade level. Your child(ren) will be bringing home a print out of your specific schedule with room numbers/locations for the night on Wednesday afternoon. Please be sure to ask them for it. (Pro tip: Take a picture of it on your phone in case it is misplaced.)
As you can see below, there are three parts to Back to School Night this year.
- Teams presenting to parents collectively
- Parents visiting team classrooms (math, science, ELA, social studies)
- Parents visiting multi-team classrooms (world language, academic strategies, art, music, drama, engineering, PE, health)
Please note: Back to School Night is a time to greet teachers, learn about the curriculum and how middle school works. Tonight is not a time for discussing your child’s individual learning or progress. Classroom visits are designed to allow you to see the classrooms and get an idea of what your child’s experience is like during the school day. Please be respectful and allow teachers the freedom to meet you without taking time away from others parents.
Early Release Day this Thursday!
Students will be dismissed at 11:20 on Thursday and our faculty will attend professional development for the afternoon in each of their respective subject areas. Regular bus routes will all be at 11:20 and there are no late buses that day.
Please help your children to make arrangements if they plan to go to a friends or to Newton Center on Thursday. Our buses have capacity only for those that have passes for them. Additional individuals on the bus make for overcrowding and is unsafe.
Finally, if your child plans to go to Newton Center, please remind them that they should be respectful of the merchants in the stores and shops. We appreciate your support.
School Picture Day - Sept. 30 - Order Here!
Picture Day is Friday, Sept. 30! To preorder pictures go to www.haywardphotography.com. Then click on the blue "pre-pay for photo day" button and enter the school code: BROWNF22. Orders will be mailed to your home. Click here for description of the possible packages you can order.
Online orders are preferred and strongly recommended. No forms need to be returned on picture day. This preorder option will be available until October, 4, 2022. If families do not preorder by then, students will receive a card with instructions for how to go online to order.
All individual pictures will be photographed outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, our photographers will make every effort to photograph outdoors under an overhang or doorway.
Hispanic Heritage Month! Sept. 15 - Oct. 15
This month in advisory our students will be learning more about great Hispanic individuals and their impact on the world. Our 8th grade advisories will be creating posters of some of these individuals that will be displayed in the hallway on the way to the cafeteria for all of us to enjoy. Here is a link to a video our 6th grade advisories will be watching to learn more about HHM.
