Kindergarten Art work on Symmetry
Dear Families,
We need lunch volunteers! We need a larger pool of folks who can volunteer! This week we have only been covered for two days. For the next two weeks we have only Tuesdays covered. The timing is 11:00-12:00. If you can help out for one or more meals, please contact Samantha or me asap. If you know someone who is not directly involved in the school but might be interested in helping out, please reach out to them.
Free Monthly Family Program: Julie Hayyat and Amber Bragg will be offering family program series starting January 11, 5:30-7:00. The program is based on the Strengthening Families curriculum. Youngest and only children have been given hard copy flyers about the program to take home today and the calendar and program outline are linked here. The program is limited to 15 families, so it is important that Weybridge families sign up asap for the series as it will be opened to Bridport and Shoreham families next week if there are slots still open. Children and caregivers will start with having supper together (food provided) and then split into two groups, caregivers with Julie and children with Amber, to work on related skills and then come back together for a short activity. Please contact Samantha or Christina to sign up.
Resources : Askable Adults slideshow link - This is the slide show used for the training last week. I highly recommend you open it up: it’s full of good information and resources. United Way Substance Prevention presentation - this program was well received. The 4th/5th grader particularly liked it because it talked about why not to use substances as opposed to just saying not to. The presenters were really impressed with the questions the students asked.
Ice Skating Rink planning meeting - We had an excellent meeting Tuesday evening. There is lots of interest and several folks working to make it happen. If you are interested in helping, please contact Tim Berthiaume.
Engineering Design Project - Passive Solar Houses: This week Andrea Murray of Vermont Integrated Architecture (VIA) provided an introductory presentation regarding designing and building energy efficient homes and students had the opportunity to visit a home undergoing extensive renovation to become fossil-free. Susan Coddaire, also of VIA, was our guide. We hope to return in the spring to see the project near completion.
Overview of the design project (12/11-12/15): Keeping homes at a comfortable temperature takes a lot of energy— and creates a lot of pollution. Teams of K-5 students will use green engineering/architecture to design and insulate a model home that maintains a comfortable temperature inside no matter what the temperature is outside. Monday afternoon, 12/18, students will share their models with experts to explain the decisions, both aesthetic and functional, that they made in the design and construction process as a team. Tuesday morning all of the houses will be on display in the Common Room. Schedule for design and build sessions: Monday-Thursday, 10:00-10:50; Friday, 1:40-2:40.
Have a lovely weekend.
Christina
Art Cards are here!
Art Cards are an annual tradition at Weybridge Elementary School where each student receives a pack of locally printed greeting cards that feature their original artwork. Please check your child's backpack this Friday to find their set of Art Cards! These cards are a gift from FOWE, there is no cost to families.
Please join me in extending a special thank you to our art teacher Sarah Flinn for nurturing our young artists. Through her guidance, the students used a variety of materials and techniques to express themselves - techniques like painting & coloring, printing, collage, sketching, and more. For our students, this type of work can be regulating, empowering, informed by art history, and just plain fun. Thank you!
If you have any questions about your cards you can contact Erin via fowe2018@gmail.com.
