Dear Families,
In January, school librarians will be deploying surveys to students about the library media program in each school. Results from this survey will be used to improve library programs, instruction, and collections (print and digital). The questions can be viewed here: Elementary Student, Secondary Student. Like other surveys your child has participated in during their time in Liberty Public Schools, you can elect to decline your student's participation. The LPS Parent Survey Decline Form was sent out in August and included the option to decline Library Media Survey participation. You may also complete the form at this time. Please complete the form by January 5th if you would like to opt your student out of the Library Media survey.
This information and links to the questions and decline form are also available on the LPS libraries website under Library Media Parent Information.
Thank you for your ongoing support of your student(s) and of our school district.
Sincerely,
Andrea Sumy
Library Media Director

Meet our Staff
Mrs. Kathy Laffoon-Gifted ELA
Mrs. Laffoon was born in Kentucky and grew up in Japan. She has a Bachelors degree from William Jewell College and a Masters in gifted education from KU. She started her career in public education 39 years ago and has been at LMS for 16 years. She states , "I love learning new things everyday with my students. I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I played "school" as a first-grader." Mrs. Laffoon enjoys reading, scrapbooking, and hiking in her spare time.
Mrs. Cory Munson-Science
Mrs.Munson was raised in Raymore, Missouri and graduated from Ray-Pec High School. She has been in teaching for 18 years and has been at at LMS that whole time. She has her Education Degree from the University of Central Missouri. She states , "I got into teaching because it's what I've always loved and imagined myself doing. My mom jokes that the reason my younger brother was such a pain in school is because from the time I started school until he refused to play with me anymore, I would come from school and play school with him. I was the teacher, he was the student, and I taught him everything I learned that day. By the time he went to school, he could fly through work, and then he spent a lot of time talking and distracting others. So, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I landed in middle school science because middle schoolers are the most fun age to teach and science is the funniest subject to teach...in my opinion! I could list a million reasons why, but you can just take my word for it..." Mrs. Munson has two sons, a corgi, and a three-legged Husky. She likes to spend her spare time paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, and camping.

Boosting Student Safety, Privacy, and Security Online
With students spending more time online, it’s essential to help them understand how to protect their personal information and stay secure. Here are some tips to help them navigate the digital world safely:
- Use Privacy Settings: Review app privacy settings with your child to keep personal info limited.
- Check Privacy Policies: Look over app privacy policies together to see how data is used.
- Spot Scams: Teach kids to recognize scams—like suspicious emails, odd logos, and clickbait.
- Understand How Apps Make Money: Many apps sell ads or data; help your child limit what they share.
