TK/K/1/2 Vocal Music Spring Update
TK/K/1/2 Vocal Music Spring Update
Happy Spring! In vocal music class during the month of March, we honored Women's History Month by learning about influential female musicians as well as learning songs highlighting Women's History. Be sure to look for "Ask Me" sheets for the songs below that were passed out these past few weeks, and ask your student to sing or dance the songs linked below!
If your student is in TK or Kindergarten, in March and April we learned about Gaby Moreno, a female singer-songwriter from Guatemala, and we danced to her song "Fronteras." In preparation for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, we have started learning the echo song Tongo, from Polynesia, and we are playing the song game Se Se Se, which is a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" song from Japan. We also have been singing the echo song My Name is Michael.
If your student is in 1st grade, to honor Women's History month in March we learned about Selena, and danced to her song "Baila Esta Cumbia." We also learned the echo song Caney Mi Macaro, from Nigeria, and another echo song, Oh, Ricka Bamboo. We have also been practicing the very fun partner song game "I Let Her Go Go."
If your student is in 2nd grade, to honor Women's History month in March we learned about the professional ballerina Misty Copeland, and her role in the Firebird ballet, with music composed by Igor Stravinsky. We have been having so much fun acting out and dancing the different roles of the Firebird ballet! We also learned the round "Frére Jacques," from France, which we have also been singing in Spanish and in German. We also have continued to play a very fun hiding song game, called "The Button and the Key."Ask your student to sing it for you, and you can play the game together!
If you have any questions about the vocal music program, feel free to reach out directly to Ms. Koplinka-Loehr at: daniellekoplinkaloehr@ccusd.org. Your students are wonderfully musical and we have been having so much fun in music class!

Ridwell Recycling Drive!
Linwood Howe is keeping plastic film out of landfills with Ridwell this spring! To participate in this limited-time recycling drive and celebrate Earth Month, bring plastic film (ziptop bags, grocery bags, bubble wrap, and lots more) to school on April 8th - May 6th and drop it in the blue bins by the entrance. Ridwell will make sure it stays out of landfills. It’ll be turned into new decking materials instead! Start collecting plastic film at home now so you have a bunch for the drive.
Curious about at-home recycling pickup from Ridwell? They collect hundreds of common household items you can’t recycle curbside, like plastic food packaging, lightbulbs, clothes, Styrofoam, and more. If you sign up for a household membership by May 23, you’ll also help earn pickup of the school’s plastic film for all of the ‘25/’26 school year (when 10 new members sign up).
Visit https://get.ridwell.com/lin-howe for more information—and make sure you sign up through that page so your membership counts toward rewards for the school!
Hip Hop Pizzaz Assembly
Hip Hop Pizzaz Assembly
Lin Howe Students experienced Hip Hop Pizzazz assembly this past week on April 9! This fast-paced and energetic assembly brings the history, style, and movement of hip-hop culture to life through dance, rhythm, and audience participation.
Presented by Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Arts Teach program, Hip Hop Pizzazz combines fun, education, and movement in a way that captivates and inspires students. The performance supports the mission of Arts Teach:
"To provide high quality arts experiences that promote creativity, critical thinking, and community through diverse and inclusive performances."
Students learned how hip-hop began, explored different dance styles, and even got a chance to move along with the performers!
Try these conversation starters after the assembly:
What instruments did they use to play the beat?
Can you show me one of the moves or dances from the assembly?
How did the performers use rhythm and teamwork during the assembly?
Hip Hop Pizzazz Assembly Student Write-Up
written by Linh Eustis
5th grade/Fulinara
It’s our first week back from Spring Break, and this assembly definitely got everyone hyped up. We would like to thank the school for making this energetic performance happen. Ben and May are performers from Drum In Dance and were the stars of this week’s assembly.
Ben is a drummer who uses repurposed garbage cans and five-gallon buckets as his percussive instruments while May is a hip hop dancer who pops and locks. In the beginning of the show, they start off by clapping and getting everyone to do so while they tell us about a paradise, an island where they “take us off to.”
One of the main parts of the show was the hip hop dancing. The two taught us the three basic moves of hip hop: popping, locking, and breaking. May demonstrated all three moves and even turned it into a little dance.
Around the middle of the assembly, they asked for participants to compete in a drum off. Ben would play a beat, and the two contestants would try to copy the beat and who ever did the best at copying it would win. Then they asked for participants for a hip hop dance off. Six people would get in a line and perform their favorite dance moves for the audience. It was an epic dance battle.
After the show, there was a Q&A. This assembly to me was very enjoyable and I hope others enjoyed it too.
