Dear Families,
March has already been an incredibly busy month, and it doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon! Read Across America Week was a great experience, the Book Fair was a huge success, and Music in our schools Month is in full swing! Also this month, we will be having our annual STEAM Fair, but time is running out to sign up! If your child is interested, be sure to sign up by AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! More info below on how to sign up.
While the activities have been a great way for our school to continue its culture of belonging and having fun together, LEARNING new and exciting content, strategies and skills remains our primary focus. March is often where the rubber meets the road when it comes to the application of skills and knowledge in a grade level. Students are asked to apply the skills they've been working so hard to develop all year. In their Literacy Block, students are asked to read more deeply, cite evidence from text, elaborate on evidence and express their opinions based on evidence. In Math, students are asked to solve multi-step problems, explain their thinking and articulate their problem solving approach.
Parents often ask how they can support their child's learning at home. Having conversations with your kids about their learning is one of the best ways to help them cement their learning and make it more meaningful. Understandably, it can certainly be challenging to get them talking. (i.e. How was school today? "Good". What did you learn today? "Stuff") Try using class newsletters to ask about specific books, topics, or how they are solving problems in Math class. Not only can this help your child's learning, but maybe most importantly, it shows your child you value their learning and the importance of school. This article talks more about the do's and don't to help those conversations along. Good luck...and keep 'em talking!

Read Across America Week!
Read Across America Week was a hit! From extra Inchy coins to reading together as a school, to guest readers in the classroom, we had fun joining schools across the country in the effort to celebrate Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss!
And in the spirit of Dr. Seuss:
Read Across America at the Brown School!
We celebrated reading with teachers and friends,
We read and we read and hoped it would not end!
We invited others to read in our school,
We even had hockey players read who were Oh so cool!
We read in corners, in chairs and on cushions,
We read adventures and poems, and about dancers and magicians!
We read in hallways, in doorways, on our feet and on our heads,
We wore our jammies, snuggled our stuffies and just read and read and read!
Read Across America was fun for a week,
But we won't stop reading, not even when our bones begin to creak!
It's Time for the BROWN SCHOOL STEAM FAIR!!!!
The Brown School will hold its third Annual STEAM Fair on Thursday, March 27th! This is a wonderful opportunity to empower our students and provide an opportunity for them students to show off their thinking skills. Students may work alone, with a partner, or in a group of three. Students are asked to begin with a question or a problem to be solved, and then follow the scientific method to investigate and/or work towards solving.
If your child would like to register, SIGN UP HERE!
*We are so grateful to our Brown School PTO for sponsoring this event. No great event happens without the help of many volunteers, and we are still in need of people to help with set up, break down and helping students with their displays. Please help us if you can!
