Career
For career class, students all turned in a draft of their first resume at the end of quarter 1. They also continued working on their CSPs (Career Success Plans), researching their top career choices and comparing/contrasting all aspects of these prospective careers. They continue to work through online modules from Dave Ramsey's Foundations in Career Discovery as well. In addition, we always spend time researching our career guest speakers prior to their presentations.
English
For ELA, we wrapped up our novel, Of Mice and Men, wrote final essays, watched the movie, and compared and contrasted the book and the movie. For quarter 2, we opened with mini lessons about rhetorical appeals including ethos, logos, and pathos. We look forward to diving more into persuasive appeals throughout quarter 2!
Test Prep
Our students continue to learn test strategies and tricks, and also learn about the many resources available to them to support test success, including College Prep Genius, Khan Academy Digital SAT Prep courses, and Bluebook practice tests. Some of our students are also studying for the Accuplacer exam, for the opportunity to participate in college dual enrollment courses. We wish all of our students luck!
GED Pathways
Students are playing weekly interactive Kahoot games that include many ELA skills. They also participate in interactive GED prep videos and test prep questions, and work independently on self-paced grammar and reading and vocab courses via Khan Academy.
Yearbook Club
I am SO excited about this year's yearbook club! After our first meeting together in September, I knew I had an amazing and creative group of students to work with. We created a collaborative document that listed all of the wonderful ideas and improvements we'd like to see in the 24-25 yearbook. Students are tasked with taking and organizing photos and then dividing and conquering to work on pages to make our yearbook come to life! Our next meeting will be Friday, November 8th and we will really dive into creating pages in Canva.

U.S. History
In U.S. History, we have been discussing and learning about the voting and election process, including checking out sample ballots, early voting, and county statistics, etc.
Consumerism 1
Students are wrapping up Chapter 3 about debt and emergency funds. They continue to learn how to be financially literate teenagers!
Consumerism 2
We are wrapping up personal budgeting. Students are analyzing financial scenarios and determining a budget and ways to increase their end of month savings.

Biology
In Biology, we have been working on Ecological Energy Pyramids while learning about how energy is reduced when traveling up each trophic level. Students created scientific models representing primary producers, consumers, energy levels, and numerical equivalents of caloric resources. In addition, students participated in a simulation that further demonstrated how ecosystems can break down if one trophic level has more life than can be supported. As we move forward, students will be researching national parks around the world, analyzing their biomes, and completing presentations as travel guides to the class.
English
In English, we ended our month novel study with Of Mice and Men as some students wrote essays identifying a common theme throughout the novel with text support, while other students participated in a "Socratic Seminar". Students did an impressive job with both projects and had an opportunity to view the movie as they compared and contrasted the differences in the novel. This classic novel elicited many in depth conversations about the life in the 1930's, consequences of actions, and acts of mercy. It definitely got everyone thinking and talking! Rhetorical appeals will be our next focus.

Algebra
In Algebra this month, we've been tackling progressively more complex equations and diving into the world of functions. Next, we will be graphing linear equations.
Geometry
In Geometry, we explored the angle pairs created by parallel lines and transversals. We have just started studying all things triangles and congruent figures.
Test Prep
In Test Prep, we’ve been honing the skills students will need for their SATs or GEDs, along with tackling sample test questions.
Key Club
We're off to a great start with Key Club! Our chartering application was approved, and students began brainstorming how we can give back to our community. We are creating bookmarks for local elementary schools to spark the love of reading for the Lit for Life Governor's Project.
We are also currently hosting a book drive for Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida through 11/21. We are accepting NEW books in the lobby, or you can purchase from our Amazon wish list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1OI60IDCE56EC?ref_=wl_share
Please note: Due to Hospital Infection Prevention and Control measures, Golisano's can only accept donations of new, unused material.
