Message from Principal Gaffney
Dear Charger Community,
The close of the 2024/2025 school year marks a time of reflection on the many memories and important lessons learned by our students. We celebrate our graduating seniors, who now turn the page to pursue their individual aspirations. We thank them for the positive impact they have had and look forward to their future achievements. Simultaneously, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of a new generation of students, ready to make their own mark. Our staff deeply appreciates the trust and support of our parents and community. We wish you all a safe and blessed summer.

Opportunities at Pike Central High School
CTE Programs
Home Health Aide Pre-Apprenticeship Program & CNA Program
Our CNA Program with Amber Manor and USI will start this summer. The students will have an opportunity to apply to the program starting next week. The process for this program is: the student will complete the application, be hired by Amber Manor and then take the Home Health Aide Pre-Apprenticeship Program which will lead to the CNA Program. When the students complete these programs and if they have a gpa of 3.4 or above they can be a direct admit in the USI Nursing Program. USI is reserving 5 spots for students who are participating in this program. This is a great opportunity for our students.

Green Power Team
Pike Central Vocational Welding
The PCHS Vocational welding program had an amazing weekend at the Midwest Team Welding Tournament. Pike Central vocational welding students participating as part of the Patoka Valley Vocational Cooperative brought home First and Second Place Team trophies and 8 individual trophies on May 2, 2025, from the 44th Annual Midwest Team Welding Tournament held at J. Everett Light Career Center. The two teams competed against twenty-one other teams.
Medical Terminology
Big congratulations to the Medical Terminology class. They completed both CPR and BLS(Basic Life Support) training provided by Dawn Lehmkuhler. It was a wonderful day and a great way to help prepare our students for future success in the medical field.
Landscaping Class
Mr. Kluemper's landscaping class worked hard to renovate a flower bed in the student commons. They purchased new plants and mulch and made it look very nice!
Construction, Architecture, and Engineering Guest Speaker
Marc Garriott, the Regional Sales Manager for Huber Engineered Woods came to speak with the construction, architecture, and engineering students at Pike Central. His company has been family owned and run for 6 generations and is one of the largest engineered wood product companies in the United States. He demonstrated his company's products to the students. He showed how they were made, and how superior they are to other products on the market. He also showed them how they were installed. He did an amazing job as it was his first program for high school students. We look forward to working with him again in the future and possibly get some donations from his company to where the students can learn, first hand, how to use their products.
TV & Radio Broadcasting
Congratulations to Mrs. Bohnert's TV & Radio Broadcasting class on taking 2nd place for their short film, I.S.I.T.G.H.O.S.T.S, at the Va Bene film challenge. The students had two weeks to create a five-minute movie with certain requirements. They filmed at the History Center in Petersburg. Their movie, along with others, will be shown at the Astra theater in Jasper on May 2, 2025. If you are interested in an evening of entertainment, feel free to come out and see our students in action. The event is free but does require a ticket.
Please congratulate all of those who were part of the movie crew; Jakob Newkirk, Owen Longest, Blaine Barnett, Landon Harvey, and Nolan Bailey.
Southwest Indiana STEM Challenge
PCHS took a couple of teams to the Southwest Indiana STEM Challenge at OCU last week. Teams competed against schools from southern IN in various challenges put on by industry leaders. The team of Tyler Collins, Kaden VanMeter, Ethan Nelson and Carson Wiscaver took home two 3rd places finishes. Congratulations!
JAG
On April 4th, the JAG class went and visited the University of Southern Indiana to learn more about what USI has to offer. Students went on a tour of campus, including the residence hall, dining center, Rec center, and Liberty Arena. They even got to tour the Applied Engineering Center and try their hand at using the virtual welding simulator. Students enjoyed learning more about what USI has to offer and realized it is a bigger campus than they expected. All in all, it was a great experience.
Vehicle Extraction Demonstration
On Wednesday April 23rd, Pike Central High School hosted a vehicle extraction demonstration. The demonstration was organized by Emily Carrico with the Patoka Township Fire Department and Mr. Vaal. Agencies who assisted with the event were Petersburg Fire Department, Pike County EMS, Pike County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Air Evac Life Team helicopter and Shell Towing.
Students witnessed a scenario of a three-vehicle accident with multiple injuries and entrapment. All of the agencies assisting responded with lights and sirens to the scene. The Pike Central Fire Science students played the victims as the Petersburg Fire Department extricated them from the car and Pike County EMS accessed their injuries and took them to the ambulance. Shortly after the extrications started Air Evac landed their helicopter and loaded a fake victim to be flown to the hospital.
This scenario was done in conjunction with the upcoming Pike Central High School prom to remind students to be careful and responsible while driving. Thank you for all of the students and teachers who attended and thank you for all of the agencies who made this demonstration happen.
