Avon East Monthly News
October 2024
It's so hard to believe it's already October! We've had such a great start to the school year and are enjoying this group of little eagles so much!
We are excited for a busy month with conferences, homecoming, fire prevention week, and all the Halloween fun our Boosters have planned during our infamous Trunk or Treat event.
Our teachers have Dibels and MAP data they will be sharing with you at conferences as well as their plans for instruction based on this data.
We appreciate your continued support, collaboration, and care as we continue to grow our eagles academically, behaviorally, and socially emotionally.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Erin Elder, Principal
Mrs. Michelle Szczepanski, Assistant Principal

With the start of the fall/winter months we also begin to see an increase in illnesses at school. As a reminder please see below when to keep your student home from our school handbook.
Illness at School:
If a student becomes ill at school, he / she will be sent to the office, and if necessary, a parent will be contacted to pick up the student, ideally within 30 minutes. Students may not be in school if he/she has any of the following:
Diarrhea / loose stools within the last 24 hours
Vomiting within the last 24 hours
Sore throat, difficulty swallowing, white spots on tonsils or throat
Severe cough, congestion, drainage or relentless sneezing
Undetermined rash / itching
Temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
Red, itching, burning or crusting of one / both eyes
Eggs (nits), or head lice - until declared nit free by the school nurse.
Note: Students must be fever/vomit/diarrhea free without medication (for example: Tylenol) for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Also, students diagnosed with a condition requiring antibiotics (ex. for example: pink eye, strep throat) must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.

Halloween & Dressing up @ School
As you are well aware, safety is a priority at school. We aim to ensure that ALL students and staff members feel comfortable throughout the day. To accomplish this objective, we request your assistance and cooperation on some important details. While students are not required to wear costumes on Oct. 31st, those students who do wish to participate are reminded of the following guidelines:
Please choose a costume that does not reflect violence. Inappropriate “props” such as blood, plastic swords, guns, knives, and weapons of any kind are not allowed – even if they are a part of your child’s costume.
Students should wear their costumes to school.
No face painting.
Costume masks are not permitted.
Please also keep in mind that costumes are not guaranteed to come home how they came (think about lunch, recess, and the active bodies of 1st and 2nd graders). For this reason, you may want to consider an alternate costume or simply dressing up in Halloween colors. It is up to you- we feel strongly about reminding you that costumes can get ruined, damaged, and/or forgotten at school- potentially making it a more difficult night for you as a parent.

Office Reminders
- We've seen a large increase in last-minute dismissal changes. This creates confusion with students, teachers, and staff. Transportation needs to be consistent- unless you send in a car rider note the morning of. There should not be changes made to bus & NEST dismissal days. Thank you!
- We have a 3:15pm deadline for picking up students early from the office. If it is after 3:15pm- you'll be asked to join our car rider line.
- When sending in notes regarding your child- please include a first and last name.
- We ask that if you are picking your child up from the front office at 3:15 or earlier that it be for appointments or emergencies only. Otherwise, please use our car rider line. Depending on where you are in line, children exit the building from 3:35-3:45. It really is a smooth process :) Please write your teacher a note for the office staff and be sure you have a car rider tag. If you forget to write a note- you can call our main office and the secretaries will take your name down and ask you to join the car rider line for pick-up- please have your ID ready. If you need a car tag, we can send one home with your child- just write a note and send in $1 to your teacher.
- As a reminder, please have your ID ready when using our front office. Our staff will be asking for IDs any time that your child leaves our building with an adult. Please also let your emergency contact pick-ups in PowerSchool know as well! Thank you for your cooperation!
Congratulations to Mrs. Heideman, first grade teacher, and Mr. Davis, custodian, for being recognized and celebrated as our September Staff Members of the Month! Mrs. Heideman and Mr. Davis are both such a gift to our East family and students and we are SO proud to be their teammates!
