What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
VPL Note: "James" by Percival Everett is available for checkout in regular type.
I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn"! If you have never read the original, I highly recommend that you do so. Years ago, it was practically 'required reading' as a rite of passage. As times changed, several of Twain's works were banned as racist and/or for having inappropriate themes.
This novel is set in the same place, with the same characters and in the same timeframe. However, in this version, the slave named Jim tells the story from his vantage point, and in his own words. Readers will recognize the familiar tale but will see and understand from an entirely different viewpoint.
This book was a surprise to me, and I really enjoyed it! Hot off the presses and brand new to VPL, I heartily recommend getting it as soon as you can! Two hearty thumbs up, and a 10/10. Don't take my word for it; read it for yourself!

"Love Letters to a Serial Killer" by Tasha Coryell:
Hannah is a thirty-something-year-old living in a cheap apartment, working a job she doesn't love, and trying to find that special someone. Every guy in her adult life has been either a one-night stand or a short-lived casual hookup. Hannah's life seems pretty ordinary and uneventful. Until 4 women are mysteriously murdered and dumped into the same ravine (not all at once). Hannah can't help herself but delve into the investigation and the thrill of the chase. She obsessively checks an online forum dedicated to the murders: gossip, rumors, maybe the occasional tidbit of someone close to the official investigation. When a suspect is arrested, Hannah watches the "perp walk" on TV. But instead of feeling victorious that the accused killer is finally caught, Hannah finds herself falling for the defendant, William Thompson. She begins writing letters to him during his incarceration, and it becomes an unlikely romance. 10/10 would recommend. It definitely had me guessing about the identity of the killer all the way up to the last page.

This week I started reading Stuart Turton's latest novel 'The Last Murder at the End of the World.' The novel contains an intricate map on the inside cover and begins with a cast list, so I know I'll need to take notes! The cover art is beautiful, and the pages are tipped in color, so it looks gorgeous on my reading table.
Turton is known for his puzzling, cerebral mysteries; I'm five chapters in and am happy to be along for the ride. Benjamin Stevenson has this to say: "Stuart Turton's literary pyrotechnics are on full display in this magnificently sly novel. Part Holmesian deduction, party Shyamalan-level twists, Turton somehow manages to reinvent both himself and the mystery genre with every book. An absolute blast." Check it out if you're a fan of murder mysteries like me!
