Teaching, Leading and Learning Like Pirates
Challenge #7

Please review the Equity Professional Learning Catalog and select your professional learning session(s) offered by our very own staff members. The catalog provides a brief overview of the sessions and registration information. We are looking forward to staff members having positive experiences and growing their professional knowledge and skills within the equity framework. A special thanks to all staff members facilitating the sessions. A reminder that snow hours will be awarded to after school facilitators and participants. This is a reminder that we do not run any afterschool activity buses on the day before major holidays. We will not be running 4:30 or 6:00 buses on Tuesday, 11/26.
- We are fortunate to have quality trained coaches that serve our staff. The purpose of the coaches is to help you incorporate instructional strategies that you would like to try in your classroom (be a pirate)! or provide you with non-evaluative feedback. Please reach out to our coaches to discuss your goals. Donna Poore, Deb Tuson, Christine Schumacher, and Ry Culver are more than happy to assist.
- Please continue to provide stellar instruction the last few days before break. It's easy to let up as we approach a holiday, but we do our students a disservice when we don't maximize the instructional time. Thank you in advance for continuing to provide focused instruction the last few days before the break.
- Be mindful that every student may not be looking forward to Thanksgiving Break. The holiday season is a time of joy and cheer for most of us. But for many students and their families, the holidays can also be a time of high anxiety and stress for a variety of reasons. If you notice that a student is struggling, please make sure you reach out to guidance or the administrative team so that we can help support the student. For some of our students and families, school means more than just getting an education.

- The Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy (see the picture above) is learning and growing. We met last week to learn about Servant Leadership. Also, students started to develop their action plan for the Do Good December Service Project. We are meeting again on Tuesday to solidify the action plan. Our students are talented and really excited about giving back. We will be requesting your support with the project in the near future.
Below is one of the videos used to help students understand the power of servant leadership. Check It Out: Inspirational Story: Giving is the Best Communication: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLq_Vp5z9D4
- See below shared by Mrs. Adrianne Quarles. Kelly Fitzgerald, Class of 2019, received a scholarship from Christiana Care for the DSU Nursing Program. She reached out to Mrs. Quarles and thanked her for providing the letter of recommendation. Congratulations and see the excerpt from the letter.
Dear Kelly,
I am honored and pleased to inform you that you have been selected as a 2019-2020 scholarship recipient for ChristianaCare’s Nursing Scholars Program. The Nursing Scholars Program was established for Delaware State University students pursuing a nursing degree. This scholarship is intended to cover the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory student fees and text book expenses related to the completion of your nursing degree.........

Avast Ye Shipmates! This Buccaneer Received a Shout Out!
- A big thank you to all staff for your participation in Friday's door barricade practice. We were very impressed with everyone's willingness to grow our students' confidence that they can take measure to keep themselves safe. We were impressed by the barricades we saw. Feel free to add your barricading pictures at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Nun_J5vc-h78gRCZsT4DZ47lrzfecDuQ?usp=sharing . ~Chad Harrison
- Thank you to Jermaine Williams for facilitating a professional learning session on Safety, Sanitation and Knife Skills for Cooking Healthy. At the end of the session, participants applied their knowledge by making delicious Salsa. Thank you Mr. Williams for delivering a team building experience that was fun and informative. Special shout out to Marty for sharing her salsa with me:) It was great! ~Shanta Reynolds
- A shout out to Donna Poore for being an innovative leader. Department meetings were canceled due to the barricade meeting, Donna developed a virtual meeting on Screencastify to make sure the social studies department received the pertinent information they were going to discuss at the scheduled meeting. Way to think outside the box, Donna! ~Shanta Reynolds
- "I want to give a shout out to TJ Griffin. He has been instrumental in helping the para educators, who work with our students that are visually impaired, work through technical issues with the assistive technology that they use. He has gone over and above by calling companies to try to figure out how to work through the glitches. The students would not have had such a great beginning without his support." ~Andrea Green
- A shout out to Nikki Bowe from Dr. Jones' weekly admin newsletter:
"When I asked Mrs. Bowe, what the intention of the lesson was outside, I received the
following: Today is a full nature day. the students are outside and the activities are built to
support free expression and cooperative play. She then continued with how her students
support the growth of the "little people. This is a great example of teacher clarity."
~Dr. Joe Jones
- A shout out to Jessica Bell for inviting me to her class to participate in a French Revolution Kahoot game. Her students had a great understanding of the content, and I struggled to keep up with their rapid responses to the questions. There is powerful learning happening in Jessica's class! ~Shanta Reynolds
- Shout out to Marty Cunningham for being honored at the UnLocke the Light Ceremony for starting the first SL24 High School Student Group. Way to lead the way, Marty! ~Shanta Reynolds
