SUMMER TERM - 11th JULY 2024
Message from the Head of School
Children are enjoying lots of transition opportunities in school getting them ready for next year. Thank you for all of your support in making this a positive experience for all. We are very lucky to have such fantastic hard working staff who care so much for our children.
On Wednesday Mr James did an assembly with year two and he was really impressed with their behaviour and the questions they asked.
Please can you send a named carrier bag into school next week in preparation for children’s books being sent home in the final week of term. We may ask to keep a few examples from each year group but these will be returned to you at the end of next year.
We hosted our ‘New to Nursery’ evening on Tuesday and it was lovely to see so many familiar faces and it was a pleasure meeting new families that will be joining our outstanding partnership.
This week we welcomed children joining us in Reception to their Stay and play sessions. They have been lovely and the children are full of excitement for their school adventure to begin.
Have a lovely weekend.

🟨 Nursery
This week in Nursery we have been thinking about what makes us all the same but different too. We have talked about what toys and games we like to play, what hobbies we have outside of Nursery, what our favourite food is and our favourite colour and who we play with at Nursery. We have also reflected on what makes us the same and came up with lots of ideas like all attending the same Nursery, we all wear a uniform, we all have friends in Nursery, we might like to play with the play dough or paint like some of our friends too.
We have enjoyed working together to create a friendship banner by colouring in and cutting out some pictures. We have thought about how we can be amazing friends at Nursery and when we see each other outside too. It has been wonderful to celebrate how amazing we all are!
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been thinking about the summer holidays and the lovely adventures we might get up to. Discuss as a family what you might do in the summer? Are you planning a trip to the park, the library, the supermarket or somewhere else? Try writing a list of things you would like to do together.
🟥 Reception
Our focus this week has been 'friendship'. We have read some lovely stories and have been talking about what makes a good friend. We have been getting really excited about Year 1 and have been spending some time in our new Year 1 classes, playing together and making new friends.
We have also been talking about road safety ahead of our trip to Carlisle Park. We have been looking at photos of the route that we are going to take and talking about how we are going to get there. We discussed how we could keep ourselves safe when we are walking to the park and how to stay safe when we are playing at the park. We have been making and building roads and houses that we might see on our way. We are all very excited.
In Maths this week, we have been recapping doubling and number bonds to 5. We have been using the rekenreks and tens frames to help us with this.

🟦 Year 1
This week we have been learning about ‘time’ in maths. We began by using the vocabulary before, after, first, next and finally to describe, sort and order events, before relating this to the days of the week and months of the year. We then moved on to reading and writing time to the nearest hour and half hour using an analogue clock, and practically showing times using teaching clocks in class. We looked at the hands on a clock and identified the big hand as the ‘minute’ hand and the short hand as the ‘hour’ hand, and practised drawing these on blank clocks to show given times.
In English, we have continued our work on the alternative version of Rapunzel by the author Bethan Woolvin. The children have enjoyed interpreting pictures from the story and comparing this version to alternative versions which they are more familiar with. The children have learnt about keeping a diary and why people keep one. As a class and independently the children have started writing the first part of a diary entry form the perspective of Rapunzel.
We have been focusing on team building skills in PE this week, and the importance of listening and working together as a team. We worked with a partner and in small teams, ensuring we talked and listened to each other to help plan tactics and decide on strategies before playing a range of games that focused on using effective communication, such as ‘tidy up’ and ‘under the arches’.
In art, we have been looking at printing, using African fabrics as our inspiration. We have focused on the artist Yinka Shonibare, and researched different African fabrics as inspiration before spending time creating our own fabric designs.
We have been learning about the different weather conditions across the UK in geography, looking at how these change across the year and discussing how this affects our clothing and activities that we do. We then created our weather reports using the Chrome books and choosing the most appropriate symbols to represent this.
We have been creating our own fact files in science this week, taking an animal of our choice and finding facts that relate to them, their diet, habitat and appearance. We then wrote these in our books using the features of a fact file, such as bullet points, headings and illustrations.
🟩 Year 2
Having read Meerkat Mail recently we have been asking lots of questions about Meerkats and enjoyed sharing our facts we already know. We decided we would like to research more facts about Meerkats to create our own leaflet all about a Meerkat's life. In preparation for this we have explored leaflets and thought about different features of a leaflet such as title, subheadings, an introduction as well as pictures and diagrams. We have then spent some time researching Meerkats and gathering facts on their appearance, diet and habitat ready to include in our leaflets next week.
In Maths we have been revisiting shape, thinking about both 2D and 3D shapes. We have spent some time exploring shapes, reminding ourselves of names of 2D and 3D shapes as well as their individual properties. We remembered vocabulary such as edges, vertices and faces as well.
In Science we have been thinking about hygiene over the past few weeks. We have discussed what good hygiene means as well as discuss what germs are. We discussed how we could stop germs spreading when we sneeze before creating a fact file to remind ourselves how to practise good hygiene. We have also thought about how we look after our teeth and how we can choose our meals carefully to make sure we are taking good care of our precious teeth and gums.
We have loved learning about Kampong Ayer in Geography this term. We have spent time comparing Kampong Ayer to Hampton and over the weeks have compared how our River Thames is used compared to the Brunei River as well as how our diets compare. We have found lots of similarities and differences when comparing localities. This week we have looked at school life in Kampong Ayer and thought about what it was like compared to our school here in Hampton. We were surprised to see their classrooms looked so similar to ours but we could see differences such as the pupils don't need to wear uniform and they don't start school until they are 5 years old.
All of year 2 have been working hard for our end of year assembly, learning our lines and the songs. We look forward to sharing our assembly with you on Tuesday 23rd July
2C and 2J's assembly will take place at 9.15am
2P and 2MC's assembly will take place at 10.15am
