Family Newsletter Apr. 2025 IMPACTing Each & Every Student!
Ms. Mercedes Message April 2025
Surveys and Community Feedback:
Thank you to our families who participated in our recent surveys. In the state of Georgia Climate Survey, we had 33 out of 15 required respondents! In the Gwinnett County Educator Effectiveness Survey, our district goal was 35.7%. At
Shiloh ES, we reached 15.8% or 85 responses. Though we did not meet our goal,
We appreciate all those families who participated.
GCPS Leadership Transition Plan & US Department of Education:
We are living in a time of uncertainty. I want to take a moment to address a couple of points. 1. The US Department of Education (USDOE): The state of Georgia and GCPS are paying close attention to any shifts or changes. With that being said, I feel confident that GCPS is be working to be strategic, supportive, and communicative during this time. 2. GCPS Leadership: On March 18th and again on March 20th via GCPS Links in Parent Square, the district shared their transition plan for moving forward together. The plan is comprehensive and seeks community engagement and the opportunity to build trust. Here is a link to the public-facing website with detailed information. https://www.gcpsk12.org/about-us/board/transition-plan

Upgrades at Shiloh ES: Starting Spring Break and through the summer, we will be getting new carpet or flooring throughout the school. The Media Center and office spaces will get new flooring during Spring Break. Classrooms will receive new carpet during the summer. In addition, new classroom doors will be installed and all outside windows will be replaced during the summer.
Branding: We are continuing to improve our signage and branding. We need some help! First, we hope to assemble a new front desk this summer. We have the parts. We need the labor. Contact Christine Goodman if you can volunteer for a day or two. Second, we are looking for an old photograph of the 1 or 2 room schoolhouse on the Shiloh Baptist Church land from the late 1800s or early 1900s. I have already contacted the Gwinnett Historical Society and Shiloh Baptist Church. The goal is to give the photo to a sign company to create a tribute to the land. Contact the school if you have a photograph!!!
Other notes:
We are aware that their is a dog roaming on our campus. We have called animal control several times. They have set a trap and have tried to relocate the animal. The dog is presenting to be friendly but scared and has evaded relocation. We have a couple of names for the dog circulating among students and staff including "Shiloh" or "General". Whatever the name, we are working to gain the animal's trust to properly relocate him to a safe place.
Thank you and have a great weekend!

PBIS Tips
PBIS Tips for Families of students in Kindergarten through second grade:
1. Set Clear and Simple Expectations
- Use 3–4 easy rules like Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Responsible.
- Display rules with pictures and review them regularly.
- Give gentle reminders and model expected behavior.
2. Use Positive Reinforcement
- Give specific praise (e.g., "Great job cleaning up your toys!").
- Use sticker charts or small rewards to encourage good behavior.
- Offer fun privileges like choosing a bedtime story or a favorite game.
3. Teach Self-Regulation Skills
- Create a calm-down corner with stuffed animals, books, or sensory tools.
- Teach breathing techniques ("Smell the flower, blow out the candle").
- Use a feelings chart to help kids express their emotions.
Bonus Tip: Keep routines predictable! Use visual schedules and give gentle transition warnings ("In 5 minutes, it’s time to clean up.").
