Character Strong Update
We finished strong in the month of August with our Kindness Kickoff! We had so many students recognized for showing Kindness to others. We are so proud of them for setting a great example for others!
In September, we will be focusing on Cooperation. Read the family newsletter below!
Math Fact Fluency Building Goals
We have started the year off strong with our math fact fluency. We will be working hard this year to memorize our math facts in all grade levels. Studies show that having these math facts memorized, frees up a student's working memory to do more complex mathematical work, like working through multi step equations and word problems. We will be working on this fluency all year and would encourage you to practice with your child at home as well. We will be sharing grade level progress in each monthly edition of News from the Nest. You can see each grade level's end of the year goal listed below:
Kindergarten - Writing numbers (goal - 40 per minute)
First Grade - Writing numbers (goal - 60 per minute) and Addition (goal - 25 per minute)
Second Grade - Addition (goal - 30 per minute) and Subtraction (goal - 25 per minute)
Third Grade - Multiplication (goal - 30 per minute)
Fourth Grade - Multiplication (goal - 35 per minute)
Fifth Grade -Multiplication (goal - 40 per minute) and Division (goal - 40 per minute)
Sixth Grade - Multiplication (goal - 45 per minute) and Division (goal - 45 per minute)

Welcome back to a new school year! This year our theme centers around butterflies and change. This is going to be a big year for some amazing changes. Of course the first thing a lot of us notice is that the kids got taller over the summer. They love to tell me they are taller than me or almost taller than me. I also see students who were new last year, come in with a bit of βI belong hereβ confidence, which is wonderful to see. Our goal is to help everyone feel confident and comfortable.
Along with change also comes some questions. The 5th graders are already asking if I will help them learn how to open locks for their lockers in middle school. (Yes- absolutely I will.) βWhatβs going on in the 4th grade hallway? Why is Mrs. Leahy in your office? My office has moved to the primary wing, so we are starting to do lunch groups in Mrs. Leahyβs βoldβ classroom until construction starts. We are starting a new curriculum called Character Strong which I am very excited about. It will be a little different for staff and our assemblies will be a little different as well, but we are still working on our GPS - Great People Skills. We are going to be really great flexible thinkers by the time we wrap up this school year.
One of my goals for August is to eat with all our new students. As the school year goes on, we will begin some lunch groups, and I often have students who will ask to eat with me, and I try to make that happen as often as I can. I love getting to talk with students in a smaller group during lunch, so they can build more connections with classmates. I also learn a lot about football and various other interests.
Please donβt hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. The beginning of the school year can be difficult for some of our students who are a little anxious until they figure out how their new teacher and classroom will operate. Every child wants to feel included and part of their classroom. I often hear parents and teachers say, βI know youβre busy . . . Please know that I am not too busy and that it is my pleasure to help. Itβs going to be a great year!

Thank you all for your support and to the support of all of our sponsors.
The Sock Hop Carnival is our second fundraiser. It is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 10th. It takes a lot of volunteers to put this event on. We have volunteer opportunities that can be done during the day, as well as, evening time. If you'd like to help, please reach out to Amber Bartel. Please watch for updates about the Sock Hop in the upcoming weeks. It seems a bit crazy to host two events within the first semester of school, but this helps to ensure that the money you, your family, and your friends raise gets spent during the school year.
During our August PTO meeting we discussed the upcoming fundraisers, reviewed the PTO budget, and discussed open positions within our committees. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10th at 6 p.m. in the JSE library. We had a great turnout at our first meeting and would love to see you at the next meeting. You can leave your children in the gym to play while we meet and also be in a drawing to win money for your teacher and a gift card for you!
Please donβt hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about JSE PTO.
