Unexpected School Closures
In the event of an unexpected school closure (inclement weather, power failure, water problems, etc), we will use School Messenger to contact you via email. For this reason, it is important that families inform us of any changes in your contact numbers or email addresses. When inclement weather is expected, please listen to our local radio stations for school information, check the School Information Status Report on the NLSchools website at https://www.nlschools.ca/schools/statusreport.jsp/ or check Twitter @RoncalliSchool for the latest school updates. Decisions about school closures or delays due to weather are usually made by NLSchools by 6:30 AM.
On days when school may close unexpectedly early during the school day due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, it is very important that we know how each child will dismissed. Please read and complete the attached memo, and return to the school as soon as possible. For your convenience, a paper copy of this memo will be send home with all the children as well on Friday, January 17th.
School Safety - Visiting the School
Please note that ALL visitors (parents, guardians, community members etc) must come into the main office to check in when you are buzzed in at the front door. For the safety of our students, visitors (including parents and guardians) are NOT permitted to go to classrooms, roam hallways etc. Someone on staff will bring you to the place in the school where you need to be or bring your child to you.
School Lunch - Ordering
Please note that school lunch is an external school program run by the School Lunch Association. In order for your child to avail of school hot lunch on any given day(s), parents/guardians have to register and sign up for this in advance on the School Lunch Website. We cannot provide school hot lunch to the children unless they are registered and prepaid.
Dress for Winter
The cold winter weather is here! Please ensure that you child is dressed for the cold frigid temperatures with coats, boots, hats, gloves, etc, as the weather can change at any time and it is always better to come prepared. Often times, classes do go outside during the day for some fresh air and movement. We also ask that you please discuss with your child the importance of not throwing snowballs/snow. We have reminded all students that we do not tolerate any snowball/snow throwing, as injuries can happen very easily.
Parking Lot Safety
Our parking lot is a very busy place, and safety for all is our top priority at all times. We ask for your full cooperation with the following
If you are coming to our parking lot at all, anytime during the school day, and are stopping your vehicle for any reason, pick up, drop off etc, you have to pull into a designated parking space in the center of our parking lot. There is absolutely no parking along the sides of our lot or up front by the main entrance at any time.
Kiss and Ride is meant to be an efficient way to drop your child off to school. We ask that if you are using the kiss and ride line, that parents/guardians please stay in the vehicle at all times and allow the kiss and ride volunteers to open the door for the children. Our goal is to keep the kiss and ride line moving as quickly and safely as possible. Please have your child and all their belongings ready to exit your vehicle. The children should be seated behind the passenger front seat.. Once you pull up along the curb side, if your child is able to open the door and get out on their own, that is okay, many of our older students can do this.
When using the kiss and ride, please continue to pull your vehicle up as close to the vehicle in front of you as possible. This will help with the congestion on the road trying to get into the parking lot. We want to fit as many vehicles on the lot as we can at any given time.
We have great concerns with the use of cell phones by parents/guardians while driving on our school parking lot. A reminder that using a cell phone while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle is prohibited including on our school parking lot as per the RNC. We have observed this many times now as vehicles pass us in the parking lot, this is NOT acceptable and is very unsafe.
IF YOU ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF OF A MOVING VEHICLE ON OR AROUND OUR SCHOOL GROUNDS, YOUR FULL ATTENTION NEEDS TO BE GIVEN TO WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU, WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY TO ENUSRE THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN.
Family Literacy Day
Family Literacy Day is January 27th. Here is a link to some great activities that you can do at home.
Breakfast Club Program
We are still in the process of getting our Breakfast Club Program up and running for 2025. Unfortunately, this will not happen next week. We will keep you updated on a start up date.
Indoor Shoes
A reminder that all students need a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school, especially this time of the year with snow, salt and heavy boots. As well, please note that NO outdoor shoes are permitted to be worn in the gym at anytime. These need to be removed in the lobby before entering the gym.
Have a great weekend everyone!
