Working on reading comprehension at home is important for young learners. Here are some tips to help children develop reading comprehension skills:
Read Aloud Together: Reading aloud to your child is a great way to model good reading habits and introduce them to new vocabulary and concepts. Take turns reading pages or paragraphs and encourage your child to ask questions or make predictions about the story.
Ask Questions: After reading a passage or a chapter, ask your child questions to check their understanding. Start with simple questions like "Who are the main characters?" or "What is the setting of the story?" Then move on to more complex questions, such as "Why do you think the character made that decision?" or "How would you have handled the situation differently?"
Summarize: Encourage your child to summarize what they've read in their own words. This helps them practice identifying the main idea and important details of the story.
Make Connections: Help your child make connections between the text and their own experiences, other books they've read, or the world around them. This can deepen their understanding of the story.
Make it Fun: Above all, make reading comprehension activities enjoyable. Choose books and activities that align with their interests and passions.
By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can help your child become a more confident and proficient reader.

Testing News from Mrs. Smigal!
MCAP:
All students in 3rd - 5th grade will participate in the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) for Mathematics in the month of May. The assessments of College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) will build a pathway to college and career readiness by the end of high school, mark students' progress toward the goal from grade 3 through high school and provide teachers with timely information to inform instruction and provided student support.
MCAP MATH Testing Dates for Mitchell: May 6th , May 7th , May 8th , and May 9th (all testing will occur from 9:00 - 10:40)
How can you help your student be their best?
Encourage them to get a good night's sleep.
Eat a good breakfast.
Remind them to show Pride in their work, be Present for the test and in the moment, and to Persevere when they come to tough questions.
Ensure your child has a working pair of headphones for the test.
Try to avoid scheduling appointments or other things that may cause your child to miss school or be late/picked up early on testing days. Testing in their regular classroom environment with their teacher is ideal for student comfort verse a separate makeup session.
COUNSELOR CORNER
FROM MS. HERLINGER, SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Monthly Character Trait
Each month, two students are recognized from each class for displaying a particular character trait. They receive a certificate and have their picture taken.
May's character trait is commitment, which means making a plan and putting it into practice.
Congratulations to all of the students who got recognized in April for showing patience!
Bi-Monthly Counseling Lesson
In previous months, I had been going into each classroom once every other month to teach the students various social-emotional topics. However, I will be going to ALL classes in May to do one final lesson.
In Kindergarten through 4th grade, we will be focusing on accepting others' differences. In 5th grade, we will be discussing how to handle upcoming transitions.
Hazel Health
CCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to offer virtual therapy appointments to students. This service is FREE for families.
For students in kindergarten through 2nd grade, the therapy sessions will take place at home. For students in 3rd through 5th grade, their sessions will take place at school.
Please visit this link to read more about our recent partnership and their involvement in the schools.
Attached is a flyer with information about counseling services over the summer.
