CLiF (CHILDRENS' LITERACY FOUNDATION) FAMILY NIGHT AT ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL
Singer, songwriter, and entertainer Jon Gailmor came to City School to help our school families celebrate literacy on Thursday night, January 25th. The evening started with a meal in the cafeteria and an interactive singing session in the library. The audience of all ages found themselves engaged and laughing as Jon Gailmor established common ground through his creative, quirky, and energetic music. Once the performance was over, the children got to pick out two books each to take home and enjoy. It was truly a wonderful evening.

NAVIGATORS KINDERGARTEN (DUPONT) OPENING UP OWL PELLETS
Ms. Dupont shared dozens of photos of her students opening up owl pellets to learn what kind of creatures their owl had consumed. What is an owl pellet? According to the Carolina Knowledge Center these pellets are the "Indigestible material left in the gizzard such as teeth, skulls, claws, and feathers are too dangerous to pass through the rest of the owl's digestive tract. To safely excrete this material, the owl's gizzard compacts it into a tight pellet that the owl regurgitates. The regurgitated pellets are known as owl pellets."
St. Albans kindergarten teachers purchased sanitized pellets for kindergarteners to dissect. Students use pictures of the skeletons of birds, mice and moles to determine what their owl pellet contains. This is a rich science learning experience for our kindergarteners.
