Happy September!

We hope everyone is off to a great start to the school year. September starts to bring a lot of great activities offered by the PTA to bring our school community together, so please be on the lookout to add these to your calendar and for the opportunities to volunteer and help these events run smoothly. The monthly newsletters are how the PTA communicates with families about what will be going on each month, so please be sure to join the PTA via Givebacks in order to receive any future newsletters in addition to the PTA directory that will be coming out soon.

We are so excited to share the love of reading with you all this month at the Literati Book Fair! The fair will be open from September 24th - September 27th, and your students will have the opportunity to shop during their Library time.

Literacy Night

Thursday, September 26th from 3:30 - 5:30 pm

• Please join us for a fun night of literacy themed fun! Shop the fair, enter to win incredible prizes from Rainy Day Books and The Rabbit Hole, sign up for a Library Card with the Johnson County Library, and hear favorite storybooks read aloud by community leaders, including our Mayor!

Parents, we need your help to ensure all of these fabulous events run smoothly! Please sign up for a time to volunteer!

Join your friends for the first skate night of the year!

SAVE THE DATE: Join us from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2024 at Shawnee Mission West High School, 8800 W 85th St, Overland Park, KS 66212, for the SMSD’s Multilingual Community Event.

Expanding on the district’s annual Bilingual Back to School Night, this event aims to highlight the diversity of the district while connecting families from all backgrounds with resources, support, and camaraderie. The evening is FREE and open to ALL SMSD families, but please register and indicate if you'd need an interpreter.

October 2nd is National Bike/Walk to school day! Get your neighbors and friends together to make the trip to school fun and celebrate! Look for more information coming soon.

Join us for the second annual Westwood View Night at the Drive-In! We will have the whole drive-in to ourselves!

Plan to arrive at 6:15 and get settled into your parking spot. You can sit in the back of your car for the movie with blankets & pillows or set up chairs to gather with friends. Before the movie starts, your kids can play on the playground, toss a football or run around with their friends. At 7:00, the dance party begins and after that, Despicable Me 4.

Tickets are $40/car by 10/5 and $50/car after.

Calling all 3rd to 6th grade girls! Please join Girls on the Run where girls can continue building confidence, nurturing emotional health, and developing vital life skills.

This season, participants will:

- Discover their I Can! Power to try new things

- Learn about how to take on challenges - even when it is hard

- Play fun movement-based games that promote resilience

- Participate in thought-provoking activities that teach valuable life skills

Go to Givebacks.com and click log in. Your Memberhub/Givebacks login will transfer over, or you can click on "I forgot my password" if you're having trouble logging in.

Click on the Give button at the top, select My Causes and Add a Cause. Search for Westwood View Elementary PTA and click the grey heart with the arrow next to it on the right and Add to My Causes. Then click on Wallet at the top and link your credit card(s). Now you'll be donating a portion of what you are already spending to WV PTA. The linked cards will do all the work; you don't have to do a thing. And, again, this is zero additional cost to you.

Add your family's information to the directory here. SMSD requires that each family opt in to having their information published in a directory each year. If you are a member of PTA, you will receive access to the directory, but can enter your information even if you aren't a member.

Some notes:

• The sooner we have your info, the sooner we can send out the link to the electronic directory.
• You do not have to include address, email address or phone number if you don't want to.
• Please fill out a form for each of your children.
• If we have enough interest, we may have a printed option for a small charge.

Renovation Sensation is a tour of four stunning homes that have been renovated or are new builds in the Shawnee Mission East area, featuring different styles and trends in home design. The tour benefits SHARE at SME, one of the largest student led, school-based service programs in the nation. SHARE creates community service and leadership opportunities for students while benefiting the entire Kansas City area. We would love for you to join us on September 18th (homes open from 10am-7pm), become a sponsor and/or volunteer the day of the event!

Hey, future Knights and Lancers!

Westwood View students will continue on to Indian Hills Middle School (the ‘Knights’) and Shawnee Mission East High School (the ‘Lancers’).

Upcoming Events:

9/13 is LANCER DAY! What is Lancer Day?? Lancer Day occurs on the first HOME football game day! There is a parade at 1:00 for the community. The parade starts at the HS and travels down Mission Road to the Village Shops where there’s a wild pep rally. Many of the clubs and sports teams have a float along with music from the marching band!

9/18 Home middle school volleyball games (free!) 5:00/6:15/7:30 IHMS vs Indian Woods MS

9/20 SME Homecoming Football Game vs SMS @ SMS

DID YOU KNOW? SME does not play Varsity Football Games at SME? The Shawnee Mission school district high schools share two complexes for Varsity football and other sports. One is located at SMSouth HS and the other at SMNorth HS
