SIS October News Fall 24
We Are Solon Strong!
A Note from the Principal
October has arrived and we have some unseasonably warmer temps! We will take all the sunshiny days we can get!
In the classroom, the arrival of October means the end of our beginning of the year honeymoon! Routines and procedures are established, the core content and academic rigor is in full swing, and teachers and students alike are getting more and more comfortable with one another. As we approach this season, we are grateful for your support from home to help students prepare for their academic days be that ensuring a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, or encouragement to keep reading, keep trying, and keep growing! Truly, thank you!
As a note of celebration, we can happily say that our new playground equipment is full installed and ready for students to enjoy! Today, is in fact, the first day they are able to play on it! Thank you to an anonymous donor and the Solon Education Foundation for helping us add this feature to our grounds! We look forward to student getting maximum play time on it!
A few reminders as we get into the year:
- If your child is going to be absent, please email his/her homeroom teacher and our office, at sisoffice@solon.k12.ia.us. Emailing the office is critically important, especially for changes in end of day routines for kids. Teachers are often unable to check emails until after students leave for the day. Emailing both the classroom teacher and the office helps make sure the message is received and passed along.
- As the weather turns colder, please consider writing your child's name inside his/her coats and/or sweatshirts. Our lost and found is always growing!
- Buses are at capacity. Please be aware that bus passes are not available for students headed to other locations outside of students' regular childcare needs. If your child is headed to a friend's house or other event, arrangements will need to be made outside of our school bus transportation. Thank you for understanding.
- Please take a moment to review our school handbook, particularly as it relates to our cell phone and smart watch policies. The policy as written requires that all phones/smart watches/gizmos and other communication devices be silenced or off in bags throughout the school day. If there is a distraction of any kind, the student will be asked to report to the principal's office with the device. The parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the device. While we understand that parents may reach out to students about end of day changes, it is important that these changes are communicated with our office so that we know any changes are requested by the parent, otherwise, students are expected to follow regular dismissal arrangements.
- With the change to Federal Policy, our attendance section of the SIS student handbook has also been updated.
Lastly, we look forward to welcoming you all into the building for our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you haven't yet signed up, you can do so at this link: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Solon_Intermediate_School
Happy Fall, Y'all!

Student Recognition
Additionally, classes competed against one another in our monthly assembly, creating a respect skit share what they knew about respect as it pertained to some preselected scenarios, including our Friday night football games. Two classes from each grade level were selected by support staff members to face off for the orange chair. Mrs. Walden's class was the 4th grade winner and Ms. Ford's class was the 5th grade winner. These two classes competed in a challenge to determine the September Orange Chair Winner.
This month's Orange Chair winner was Ms. Ford's 5B Class! Congratulations 5B!
Congratulations to the following students who were named as our SIS Stand Out Students this month for consistently demonstrating respect towards one another and adults!

SIS Library Update
We had a great month of learning how the SIS library is organized and finding books using Destiny Discover and the Dewey Decimal System. In October we will continue to brush up on our information seeking skills and explore some databases to find reliable information. We will also be working on researching different countries and creating posters to display at the Book Fair in November. Please let me know if you have any questions, you can always reach me at msutton@solon.k12.ia.us.
