Note from the Principal
Thank you!
Thank you to all the families who came out to cheer on our Tierra Linda Hawks at the Hap Rapp Track Meet!
Our kids performed so well and showed excellent sportsmanship and team spirit!
Thank you to our 2nd and 3rd grade cheerleaders out to cheer on our track participants! It was such a fun addition to the day, and I know our athletes appreciated the extra encouragement!
We really appreciate the hospitality tent that you set up, filled with cold waters, Gatorades and healthy snacks. You kept our track participants and cheerleaders hydrated and well fed throughout the day!
Thank you to our families for helping their child arrive to school prepared to strive for their personal best on CAASPP Testing!
Our students are doing so well. They are arriving feeling confident and prepared, and they are striving for their personal best! Thank you!!!!
Reminders
As we come to the end of the year, I'd love to see us finish strong!!!
- Please take a moment to review the Volunteer Handbook if you are someone who is volunteering on campus in the last month of school. If you have questions about the outlined expectations, please let me know.
- Please remember that bike, scooters, etc. should not be ridden on or in front of campus. We ask that children and adults follow this guideline for safety of everyone.
- Please encourage your child to finish strong, and with HAWK PRIDE!
As we close out the school year, I am getting several phone calls and emails praising our staff! WOW!!!!! This is so wonderful to hear. I encourage you to formalize your compliments with a nomination for a STANDING OVATION.
Thank you for your ongoing support and making sure we are working as a community to support our students!
Important News Items!
THIS WEEK! CAASPP Testing Continues! (Grades 3-5)
CAASPP Testing will begin Monday, May 13th and continue through Friday, May 24th!
Mrs. Scharich (assistant principal) and Mrs. Martyniuk (counselor) met with each classroom this week to encourage them to do their very best! Mrs. Martyniuk supported them with strategies to help them stay calm and focused, while Mrs. Scharich gave them some excellent test-taking tips.
This week, teachers will be meeting with our students to do some goal setting and encourage them to do their very best! We want our students to know we believe in them and we are here to help them shin!
During testing, you can help your child by reminding them that this is an opportunity for them to show us what they know, but should not be source of stress for them. We want to see them try their very best! Please make sure your child is getting a good night sleep each night, has breakfast and arrives to school on time.
Students who show effort each day during testing will get to join their principal for pizza on Friday, May 24th! Our goal is for every 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student to be there!!!!
Here are some things your child can do during testing to earn their way to the Pizza Party:
- Start with a “data drop” on our scratch paper before we begin
- Use scratch paper for every math problem
- Make a graphic organizer for writing, especially on the ELA Performance Task
- Be sure to “name drop” and “explain like the teacher” when asked for a written response to a question
- Use our tools such as Highlighting, Strike-through, Note-taking
- Taking our time - Use the whole test session!!!
- Raise our hand before submitting
- Be respectful to our peers if we finish before others
We know our Hawks will do a fantastic job, and we appreciate your support!

Counselor Corner
May’s Character Trait of the Month is optimism. Some people are natural optimists while others might consider themselves pessimists or realists. While everyone is entitled to do things their own way, optimism and your health are linked with overall health and longevity. You can share with your child that simply being optimistic doesn’t mean something good will happen just because they want it to; it’s important to be practical. For example, your child can be as optimistic as they want about getting a 3 on assignment, but it’s unlikely if they didn’t also put in the effort to do the work or study appropriately.
Optimistic qualities in your child can look like:
- Feeling hopeful/confident that things will turn out ok
- Seeing things in a positive way
- Being supportive of others
- Being easily encouraged when thing get tough
- Being more open to changes
- Being accountable for their choices
You can teach your child to be more optimistic by:
- Focusing on the good in a situation
- Saying something positive you can do to make good things happen (ex: study for a test)

Parent Square - Reminder to Download the App Today!
We are excited to share that Pleasant Valley is implementing a new communication system called ParentSquare this school year. We hope this intuitive and familiar platform will enhance our communications with our PVSD community.
If you have not done so yet , please take a moment to learn more and download the app!
Parent Square Attendance Feature
Parent Square for Attendance
In our continued effort to streamline communication with families, we’re excited to announce that we will be implementing the attendance notice feature in ParentSquare!
What this means for parents:
If your student is marked absent or tardy you will receive a notification via text and/or email with the option to reply within seven (7) days to provide an absence reason. Once you have replied to the email or text message to give an absence reason, your school office is automatically notified and there is no need to call the school. If you receive the notification and you have already called into the office, you do not need to reply to the notification.
Volunteer Handbook
If you plan on Volunteering sometime this year, please download the Volunteer Handbook Below.
- The handbook should be reviewed, and kept for reference.
- Pages 21-23 need to be completed and returned to Suzanne Capellini in the front office.
- Please also bring in your Photo ID or Drivers License for us to copy
Thank you for being such an instrumental part of our school community!

5th Grade Promotion
If you could help us prepare your child, that would be lovely:
- Wear “picture day” attire
- Attire should be school appropriate
- We recommend no hats, hoodies, or sunglasses for your best photo opp, however this is a parent decision. However your child arrives to school Friday is how they will be sent out to promotion, so you get to be final approval.
- Please remind your child to sit quietly, respect the speaker, and be positive throughout the ceremony
We will have someone out front for you to sign in and get a visitor sticker.
Gate will open to families at 8:20 to get your seat.
Please remember that after you take pictures and your child picks up a treat, you can sign them out for the rest of the school day to celebrate.
