Winter Weather Season - What Communication and Protocols to Expect
DPS 109 Community,
As we move closer to winter, we want to remind everyone about our approach to determining whether school will be open and how we’ll communicate any changes with you. If in-person school is not possible, we will shift to an e-learning day.
When would school not be in person?
In the Adverse Weather Procedures section of our website, you can review the process the Superintendent and district leaders follow to decide if school will be open in person. Multiple factors are considered, including the timing and amount of precipitation, temperature, wind chill, and road conditions. As mentioned above, if needed, the district will transition to an e-learning day.
When will we receive an initial notification?
We will monitor the forecast closely and send home devices the day before a potential weather event. A “heads-up” email will be sent to staff and families the day prior, and every effort will be made to send this as early as possible to allow teachers time to prepare and devices to be charged.
When is a final decision made, and how will we be notified?
Every effort will be made to make a decision by 5:30 a.m. If we are shifting to e-learning, families and staff will receive an immediate text and email from the district, along with a follow-up robocall. Please log in to Skyward to ensure your contact information is up to date. We will also put a status update on dps109.org either way (open or closed with e-learning).
How will my student know what to do on an e-learning day?
Your building principal will send school-specific information via email on the day of the e-learning day. Students will meet with their teachers on Google Meet, with links available in the principal's email, Seesaw, and/or Google Classroom.
If you have any additional questions, please email communications@dps109.org or reach out to your building principal.

"Chasing Childhood" Screening
Thank you to everyone who joined us two weeks ago to view this important documentary. We continue to seek opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations as a community about how we can better support our students. Additionally, a big thank you to our principals and assistant principals for showing up in force!
Digital Safety Information on dps109.org
Our district website has a robust collection of resources on digital safety, including tips for families on navigating popular apps and programs. A big thank you to our school librarians, Ms. Maria Galanis, Officer Maldonado, and others for their collaboration on these resources! Click below to visit the page.
What's Good in 109?
Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing photos and videos from our schools and community that capture the magic of learning and our students’ accomplishments! Recently, South Park held a schoolwide philanthropy election the day before the U.S. presidential election, and it was fantastic to see so many students engaged in the democratic process. A group of students will be presenting on this initiative at our upcoming Board of Education meeting.
Inflatable Race at Kipling
Students surpassed their recent reading goal, logging over 14,000 minutes as a school to earn a fun reward: a staff inflatable costume race! Click here to check out the video.
Halloween Parade Magic!
One of our favorite days of the year, the Halloween parades at each of our elementary schools drew big crowds! Check out a gallery of photos on the district Facebook page!
Thank You, Board of Education!
Friday is School Board Member Day in Illinois! Thank you to our seven dedicated Board of Education members for the countless hours of service you give to the children of our community.
